Presta vs Schrader valves

I have had so much trouble to the Presta valves and the top of them bending and buggering up the tube. Its probably me using the Pump wrong:mad:. Its to late to put the adapter on it to make it like a Schrader.

Do tubes come with Schrader valves as all the tubes I have seen have Presta? Then again maybe the Schrader valve would not fit with the skinny wheels?

    Whats peoples thoughts?

i have seen 7oocc tubes with schrader valves but in 30+ diameter. dont think that the racing wheel would fit the schrader....even my cycocross which takes 35 tyres wont take the schrader.

probably should look at your pumping technique...maybe buy a few tubes off the lbs and get them to show you how to pump if thats an issue?

Yes, Schrader valves are wider. Skinny rims have skinny holes. That said, I've never tried to get a Schrader through a road rim.

As you suspect, you're probably doing it wrong. Is the valve lined up properly with the hole?

I've damaged a couple of presta valves with the pump as well, you just need to be gentle, its kind of a knack.

To use schrader valves in a rim made for prest, you will need to drill the valve hole out with a 5/16" drill bit and file of any burs/rough edges.

It depends on the width of the rim as to whether or not you can do this without the risk of cracking the rim in use.

Damaged few as well. What works for me for long time now without issue, I never press pump tip all the way down as many do, but rather just a mill or two below the presta valve neck. When removing, wiggling the tip without pulling it, the pressure in the pump pushes it out rather nicely.

    Kind regards

It depends what type of pump you are using. It's pretty hard to mess up a valve with a floor pump but it's very easy to damage one with a mini pump. If you are using a mini pump or a hand pump (and you shouldn't really be, except for on the side of the road after a flat), try to keep the pump perpendicular to the valve stem. There is a tendency to raise the handle of the pump up when you are pumping hard and this bends the valve, sometimes to the point where it won't screw back in properly.

With a floor pump, the only thing is to release the lock and pull straight down away from the valve - don't try to 'wiggle' it off.

Not being smart, but if OP is damaging valves I'm wouldn't be recommending he goes near rims with a drill

    Thanks for the replies

I have a floor pump at home and have no issue with this but use the schrader adapter and no problems. However tyre was flat when in work and used a mini pump and it was a nightmare. Maybe its about technique but my hands were wrecked. Not sure if the mini pump can pump using the schrader adapter just trying to put up flat was mental with mini pump. Can mini pumps be used with schrader adapters?

Are you screwing the tip all the way out on the thread?

I find it works better with a mini pump if you only screw the tip about half way out.
