Pierce Brosnan - Cancer kills wife....and now his daughter

I'm not normally one for the celeb news but hearing that Pierce Brosnan's daughter Charlotte has passed away aged just 41 after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer kinda hit home. Terrible news for him, made worse that he lost his wife Cassandra to the same form of cancer in 1991 aged just 43.

A close family member of mine had the same cancer but thankfully last month got the all clear after treatment for the disease. Anyway my thought (for what they are worth) are with Pierce and his family. No parent should outlive their children.

I think that's sound advice and should be heeded much more than it is. Many people have the mentality that diseases only happen to 'other people' and they'll somehow escape the odds. This is especially true for the male half of the population. Sooner this mentality changes the better, I guess awareness needs to be risen more and more and cases such as this can have some benefit in that regard as it's making us have the discussion right now.

It's so sad. Myself and my mum were talking about this earlier and she said she remembers hearing an interview with his daughter saying that because of her family history she was advised that she should have children by 30 and then have a hysterectomy, ovaries removed, etc. So she mustn't have followed up on that for whatever reason, which is odd.

Edit: Hopefully her own daughter heeds advice.

How do you get your ovaries checked?

I'm not one for celeb news either but it is very sad and there's obviously a genetic component as Brosnan's late wife, daughter and his mother in law all had the same disease.

Just goes to show you that you can be rich, good looking and famous but still not immune to devastating personal loss.

This is so true. My sister in law works in oncology in Dublin and sees a lot of breast cancer in men, whereas I think most men think/ feel they can't get it. I think the official stats are 1 in 100, but her stories of men with breast cancer in their 20's and 30's are scary!

How do you get your ovaries checked?

Several methods exist, one such example would be:
    Physical exam

Your doctor will first ask you some questions and examine you to look for signs of ovarian cancer. These signs include finding an enlarged ovary (on a pelvic exam)

Its actually worse than it seems, her maternal grandmother was also killed by ovarian cancer so it seems to be a very persistent bad gene.

    Stop using contraception.

If you subsequently get up the duff, they're fine.
