If you are willing to spend a little bit extra on motor tax then the 1.8 litre would be nicer than the 1.6 litre which is a bit asthmatic in a car of that size.

    Something like this:

Actually it would probably use less over all

MPG is very similar as the 1.8 litre is under less stress carrying the car around. What sort of driving do you do? Is it all town driving/short trips?

Most 1.8 litre models are also the higher Luna spec. The highest spec 1.6 litre is the Strata which is nothing to write home about. Luna has nicer features and more comfortable seats.

You would probably be better off buying a diesel car.

Why? Given the amount of info the OP had given I'd love to hear the reasoning behind that advice

i wouldn't be doing long trips mostly short run arounds, as i don;t use the car for work and that ,

The OH had a 1.6 until recently, really piss-poor consumption - 40mpg, max. And it wouldn't pull you out of bed.

TBH 40MPG in a petrol car of that size is good to me.

To be honest if the car is only being used for potting around town then a 1.6 litre will do the job.

    I have a 1.6 avensis from 03.
Had a quick look on carzone and there is good value to be had on the 1.6
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Toyota/Avensis/-4DR-1.6/36913699298739610/advert?channel=CARS
    for example.
I get about 40 mpg from her which is good for a car of that size with a petrol engine and anyone who thinks otherwise is codding themselves.

The 1.8 is more economical than the 1.6 engine on longer journeys especially on motorway runs and equally as economical around town. The tax difference is negligible and worth paying the few quid extra each year.
