The round Zero offers are either the 1st or 2nd of August. Universities and some IT's that are on the HEL's scheme offer their places in Round Zero.

Then other colleges on the Pilot Scheme offer their places on the same day as leaving cert.

What colleges have you applied to? :)

Sorry, my last question posted twice. I think IoT's aphasia a quote of around 3-5 places solely for fetac applicants (that's why it says 3 distinctions) and then fetac applicants can also compete against LC students in terms of points. So you got 400 points with your 8 distinctions. So unless there is a dramatic rise this year you should get your place :)

Ohhh I didnt realise that you compete against LC students too... so when do those 3-5 FETAC places get given out? Any ideas?

Just checked my CAO... hopefully this day next month I will have my place... EEP!

I'm not sure, I'm sure someone else could tell you. But if you have 400 points the 3-5 places should be irrelevant.

Well Round 1 is August 17th, so you will receive your offers then unless they offer those 3-5 places in round zero.

I have 4 friends from the Northside who have all 11 Distinctions each and their still waiting. God Fetac must be real competitive. Most are going to wait and do the mature route at 23.

Some courses offer more fetac places than others, what courses are they applying for?

I don't think they're officially given to colleges until the 15th of July, then colleges will send them out.

Not sure what you mean. the College and Uni offers have not been released yet. Only for mature students.

    Hi folks

There are alot of changes this year in the manner in which the CAO calculates your points if you are presenting with a FETAC award.

There are two different systems for FETAC applicants. Firstly there are a quota of places reserved for FETAC applicants (usually a very small number). This is generally for courses in universities at Level 8. The other way is where FETAC applicants compete against Leaving Cert students, this is normally for courses in Institutes of Technology. It depends on what course you have applied for as to which system will apply to your case.

The bottom line is that you must achieve a full award ie a major award (which comprises of minor awards (previously modules)), which typically provides 120 credits.

Calculating your point scoring is on the basis of credits. Each minor award at level 5 (module) normally has a credit value of 15 credits thus typically 8 modules at Level 5 add up to a value of 120 credits for a major award. Check your results to see the credit value of each minor award (module)

Results are scored on the basis of the best achievement in component awards to a credit value of 120. So generally you can only present with 8 minor awards (modules) and not all the modules you completed.

    Now the complicated part -
Each level 5 and level 6 component is scored:
    • 3.333˚ for a Distinction
    • 2.222˚ for a Merit
    • 1.111˚ for a Pass

This is then multiplied by the individual component credit value to a maximum of 120 credits, a total of 400 points. (You may find it easiest to multiply the individual component credit value by 3 for Distinction, 2 for Merit, and 1 for Pass, multiplying by 10 and dividing by 9). Components leading to the best 120 credits are scored and applicants are ranked accordingly. The best 120
credits come from minor awards achieved with the highest grades

Some universities require that you get the full award in one sitting or in one year. Some also request specific minor awards eg Maths or Biology etc (check with the university or IoT)

Offers are made at different times - Early August - Round Zero for those competing against other FETAC applicants for a quota of FETAC places. Offers are made in mid-August in Round 1 for all other FETAC applicants who are competing with Leaving Cert students.

Finally remember FETAC is only the name of the awarding body and does not make the offers. It is in a similar position to the State Exam Commission. The offers are decided upon by the universities and colleges and the CAO is the system through which the offers are made.

Ok so all this is very confusing - check http://fetac.ie/fetac/learners/hels/hels.htm or
    http://fetac.ie/fetac/documents/Progression_Opportunities_for_2013.pdf for more details

If in doubt consult with your FETAC provider (college where you sat your FETAC award) and their Career Guidance person.

    Best of luck

Thanks for that Further Ed. I'm just wondering if you could clear something up for me as I was confused with what a member on here said recently.

If a college/universities minimum requirements are five distinctions under the HIgher Education Link Scheme:

It was my understanding that applicants were ranked according to their best 8 modules. I.E if someone had 8 distinctions, they were more likely to get a place than someone with the minimum 5 distinctions.

The member on here said that everyone who got the mimimum of five distinctions went into a lottery so to speak.

Could you clear up what is the correct of the two? It would be appreciated, thanks.
