Looking to upgrade/change from my current set of Wilson Ci7 irons that I have had for a few years now. I am a High Handicapper and looking for peoples opinions?

Find a driving range that is attached with a golf store and go hit clubs. Give everything a try. The major brands don't have a huge difference between them. A matter of price and personal taste is what it normally comes down to

Some of the people I play with that are high handicappers use Ping and Cobra. I've hit them my selve, the cobra S3 irons seem to be a good club , from my limited experience.

    Thanks for that

    I second Cobras, lovely clubs.

Have the cobra s3's myself and love them. But go to a range and hit a few different sets see what suits you.

Never hit them, but they don't look aesthetically pleasing to my eye.
If I don't like the look of the club, I just don't feel comfortable or confident with it.

    And you're right too

Like others said .. a range or shop that will let you hit a few would be ideal. Some good deals around, and a good second hand market at the moment so if you can, try not to rush into it.

If staying with Wilson maybe should also check out their D-100, just out this year/end of last year I think.

I think they are designed for the high handicapper but like above since you have been playing for a while, should try out a few clubs to see which suits you the most.

thanks for that - ill check them out. I dont have an official handicap, but would usually play off ~15 or thereabouts.

Check out Mizuno JPX 825's or the MP59's, they'll make a proper golfer out of you and you'll look the part.

they look very good - dont have much experience with mizuno thou...bit on the pricey side?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

also, would there be much to be said for getting a set with a hybrid included? I wouldnt use a 4-iron very much as it stands...

Yes they may cost a little extra, but you get what you pay for though, have you considered buying 2nd hand, there's a great selection here and their ratings are on the conservative side.

Suited for High H, 300 notes - nice club and good deal but make sure you try them out.

Would you not just hang onto them so?
Or are you just treating yourself? (nothing wrong with that!)

Maybe just pickup a hybrid and see how you like it?
A whole, brand new set is a big expense, and it might well do nothing for your game (in fact Id be surprised if it did), whereas adding a new club like a hybrid instead of a low iron can make a substantial difference.

Ive been looking at various irons, both online and in-store, and like the look of the Ping G20 or G25 - any one have any thoughts?

Also, Ive seen Callaway RAZR-X irons with graphite shafts at a very good price..

Ping irons are really lovely too. Matter of feel for you really now after trying out a few.

I wouldn't recommend graphite shafts ... unless you're old and have a slow swing :-)

thanks for that - ya i think they look/feel great. think the g25s would be my preference, but very pricey!

thanks for that on the graphite shafts...

    Or vulnerable to tennis elbow...
I wont touch steel shafts again - going graphite completely resolved a come and go problem for years.

Nor do I think you are correct on the swing speed - full range of graphite shaft flexes available.

I thought all the graphite shafts were lighter than the steel ones
