40 euros of Diesel lasting roughly 200 miles?

Have a 07 1.5 diesel van and I've had a sneaky suspicion lately that the fuel economy isn't quite what it used to be. I didn't test it out properly with the trip meter yet, but I remember the trips I've made since I was at the pumps last and going on google maps etc it would have been just under 200 miles. Does that seem like low mileage for 40 euros worth of Diesel? I haven't been doing a lot of driving in it 'till lately, so I'm not 100% sure what I should be getting in terms of economy but it seems to me like it was better before. Cheers

Putting rough figures on it. You bought about 27 litres of diesel depending on what you paid for it. You travelled 200 miles/321 km that's 33.58mpg or 8.41l/ 100km. Which seems very low alright. But before you do anything else I'd brim the van with diesel reset the trip drive for 3/4 of a tank whatever refill van to same spot. Take note of distance travelled and the litres used to fill the van. Calculate mpg from there. It's the most accurate way your wasting your time doing it any other way. If your only guessing 200miles you could have travelled further. What kind of a van is it ?

Cheers for that, I will check it out properly for sure. It's a Nissan Kubistar. It was doing a little of chugging and missing a few weeks ago and would occasionally cut out. That problem disappeared though so I assumed it was nothing major but now with the fuel apparently less economical I'm not so sure.

More info is needed before being able tosay that the mpg is very low. He could be sat in traffic in dublin city centre for 8 hours a day and/ or be carrying lots of weight.

Never really carry anything in the back of it at all.

The journeys I make are usually between towns, fairly decent roads and local town driving. No real heavy traffic etc.

I hate this sh*te of "i put x amount of monies worth of gogo juice in my tank, how far can i go or why am i getting this mileage"

State the litres put in. That would be a lot more useful than that other load of crap

    Thanks for the useful input.

So is it 40 euros at 1.42 or 1.47 a litre? Fill up at different forecourts/depots inbetween? How may litres is that?

Its a seriously daft way of calculating mileage and range. Don't hear of euros per gallon or euros per 100km

But of course I do it the proper way, what would I know.....

Nissan kubistar =Renault Kangoo so its the 1.5dCi and ive gotten 55mpg no problem in slightly loaded ones. Despite their size theyre still a van so tyre pressures should be 3 bar or 44psi If thats the max pressure rating of any tyre on your van then it's not suitable but put 36psi in them. Commercial tyres rated to at least 51psi are needed. Id recommend a good full service if it hasnt been done in a lomg time. Besides that I'd say something is wrong with the fuel injection system. You'll need to have it checked at a Nissan or Renault garage. This should involve a diagnostic to measure rail pressures, injection duration and voltages along with any faults stored in the memory or even present. Following that, a leak off test would probably wand toing too. You could be lucky though. It might just be the MAF sensor starting to give out.

So at the last fuel fill I set the trip meter to get a more accurate idea and got 149 miles from 13.3 litres of Diesel.

13.3 litres = 2.92 Imperial gallons according to Google.

149 miles divided by 2.92 gallons = 51 mpg roughly.

Strange that it went a lot better this time. The 40 quid I put in it last time out seemed to go absolutely nowhere. The van was DOE'd just before that, would that have an effect on economy?

Driving style, load, country/motorway/town miles are all variables to be taken into account here.

Its not exactly hard to estimate litres from the cost of the amount put in in fairness; changes are the difference between the more expensive fuel and the cheaper fuel will probaby work out at a litre maybe at most.

Can't see how, the DOE is just a test. It wouldn't interfere with anything that would making it better or worse.

No, it wouldn't. There are too many factors to consider with the other method of calculation so best just forget about it and any time you want to measure the mpg performance, only ever use litres and brim the tank, reset the trip, then when you brim the next time you'll see what you used and how far that took you.
Waiting for the orange light and throwing x sum of money in is no good, what price was the diesel? How many litres were left in the tank when the light came on? That alone could cause a miscalculation of up to a gallon.

My car is getting worse. It used to do 500 miles to 40 quid a few years ago now its more like 350 miles to 40 quid/

I remember being shocked the first time 40 quid actually went into my car!

I remember the days our old rover 414 used to take less than £20 to fill up.
Nowadays I spend €100 odd per fill

I have the same van OP and i find it's a miser on diesel.

But....i put €35 in at 143.9 p/l and got just over 300 miles on a return trip to galway and a small bit of city driving in dublin.

Last week i put €40 at 145.9 p/l and at just over 250 miles i had to throw in another tenner to get me home!! That was a motorway run to newry and normal driving on decent main roads in the north.

The first fill was in Esso and the second was in Applegreen.

I'm finding i normally get the best mileage from the esso fuel. Topaz not too bad and applegreen can be poor. My driving style stays the same and most of my journeys are similar enough also.
