Channel 4 is to air the Muslim call to prayer live every morning during the month of Ramadan.

The broadcaster said it was an act of "deliberate provocation" aimed at viewers who might associate Islam with extremism.

The headline-grabbing move will see Channel 4 broadcast the three-minute call to prayer at about 3am for 30 days from the start of Ramadan on 9 July.

In addition, on the first day of Ramadan Channel 4 will interrupt programming four times during the day – to mark subsequent calls to prayer – with a 20-second film to remind viewers of the approaching prayer time.

After that date, the channel will air the 3am call to prayer on live TV, with the other four prayer times will be broadcast on its website.

Okay they are only showing 4 on the telly on day one and the 3 am call to prayer after that. Should a tv channel be indulging one faith like this? or is it educashunal?

    The public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular: (b) appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;

I think the major difference is RTE is a state broadcaster so shouldn't be showing a preference for any religion. Channel 4 on the other hand should probably be free to broadcast if they wish, it's a poor reflection upon Britain if there is a violent reaction or whatever.

Jan Moir is probably in a restraint as I type.

Somehow I doubt they need a tv station to remind them.

Well RTE have changed the Angleus to a non-denominatioal pause for reflection have they not?

There's no religious imagery in it any more at all.

What about the one of the guy doing the chalk drawing up by Trinity of someone praying, or is that not shown anymore?

Channel 4 have done a lot of fairly balanced shows and events around the Muslim, indigenous population conflict.

I think their main reason for doing this is debate, publicity and inclusion. I don't think it's any kind of sign the Muslims are taking over.

The main reason they're doing it is for political correctness.

Religious crap like this and the angelus should be kept off the tv.

They said themselves they'rebdoing it to be provocative, thats not political correctness.

Why should religious stuff not be on the tv? Religion is a big part of a lot of people's lives just because it doesn't have anything to do with you doesn't mean it shouldnt be on the box.

Why is it disgraceful, might I ask?

I think the Ramadan coverage is a very nice gesture by C4.

If RTE want to propagate a particular religion they can do so when they are not funded by a "poll tax".

They are not propagating a particular religion though. It is for all Christians and accepted by all Christian faiths, in a country in which well over 90% of the population identify themselves as Christian.

It's a pity that RTE won't follow C4 in marking the call to prayer.

They cater for their audience just because you don't believe doesn't mean they have to change everything , what your doing us forcing you beliefs/ non beliefs on others. I don't like xpose that doesn't mean it should be. Banned

The Angelus isn't a christian pause for prayer it's Roman catholic prayer - RTE can change the pictures but the bell peeling sequence and the prayer are Roman catholic.

And the Protestant churches in this country have said that they have no issue with it. I am CoI and I have no problem with it. I see very little in it that enforces Catholicism over Christianity.

C4 did a series of Easter and Christmas programming a few years ago. Manchester Passion (featuring all the 80s/90s Manchester music) and I can't remember what they called the nativity but it was the same idea.

I'm interested in religion even though I'm an atheist. I plan on tuning in.

That's as maybe - it still doesn't take away form the fact that it is a sectarian prayer - regardless of other christian churchs views.

Catholic. Other Christians can join in if they like but it is Catholic.

C4 usually have some great documentaries on during major Christian holidays.
