Procedure for retaining written off car

    Hi,

My car was involved in a small accident last week and sustained cosmetic damage to a few of the panels. I got an estimate for a few grand to fix it. The problem is, the car's probably only worth €1000, tops, so I'm concerned the insurance company are going to write it off.

It's a great car - really reliable, comfortable, reasonable on petrol, so I'd like to keep it. What's the procedure to try and buy it back from the insurance company if they write it off?

    Thanks...

    Just don't submit a claim?

Just went through this. Car was parked at the side of the road and someone scraped down the side of it. I wasn't at fault obviously.

Went to a repair shop and got a quote and sent it to their insuance company. The cost to repair it to the same condition before the accident was greater than 1000 euro so the insurance company sent out an assessor. (Car is due an NCT in a few weeks so I showed him all the work that had been done for this. Don't know if this helped but I done it anyway.) He valued the car at 1250 euro and said the cost of repair was higher than that so it was an economic / category D write off. Got a letter from the insurance company a week later with an offer of scrapage for 275 euro or keep the car and get a check for 1250 - 275. Market value less scrappage.

I'm just going to replace the wing mirror and deal with the cosmetics, maybe have a go at tidying it up a bit myself. Alternatively if it was going to cost me say 1000 to fix myself, I'd be better off taking the scrappage. Also consider the effect on your cars resale value.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately it scraped off another car, so I needed to submit a claim for their damage.

So Ronnie Beck, the Insurance company just offered you an option of whether to scrap it or keep it without you having to ask them for it?

    The accident was your fault?

I wasn't the one driving the car at the time, but it was the driver's fault and the driver was insured on the car

OP, you can request to buy the salvage from the insurance co after they're paid out/settled the claim, before it goes to tender to the breakers by the insurance co. It's a pretty standard request and most insurers will be happy to sell it back to you, as they avoid recovery fees/storage/and low tender offers from breakers.
You will have a bit of haggling over the price, but thats to be expected.
