VW Golf Warning Light

This light (image attached) comes on a few minutes after I have started driving my 02 VW Golf. I know before that it is related, indirectly, to the brake lights. Sure enough both my brake lights were gone, so replaced the bulbs, but still no brake lights and still get the warning light on the dash.

Anyone got any ideas on what I do next?

possible brake light switch issue. The warning light is general vw specific fault light along with been the glow plug light.

Had same problem on my 04 golf a while back and was indeed the brake light switch.

If your car is diesel then that symbol looks like the glowplug symbol.

Glow plug light. Probably need replacing.

Given that the brake lights aren't working, i doubt its glow plugs.

Does the ABS light always show with the Glow Plug light or is it just coincidence that they are on in the picture above?

just a coincidence I would think but there is some situations which would cause both to light together

My brake switch went on my 00 Golf diesel but I never got a warning light. You lucky sod!!

Easy to replace if you are a DIYer. Quick job at a mechanic which cost me 20 euro just for a reference. Get that replaced since we know they are gone and then see what the light does.

You replace the brake light switch (at the pedal), that's what's causing your fault light. Not a big job, switch should cost around €15, will only take a few mins to fit.

While the symbol looks like a glow plug warning lamp, it actually refers to the diesel management control unit (ECU).

As you've replaced the bulbs and the lights are still out, it's definitely a brake light switch. Very common on VWs.

It was actually a Brake Light Switch.
Very easy and inexpensive to fix.
