Used Audi A4 (B8) - Need Advice

Hi, I'm in the market for a used A4 (B8) and need some advice. I am long overdue an upgrade from my current car (and old Focus 1.6 petrol saloon, which I've grown bored of). I want something with more power and the A4 ticks many boxes for me, so I'd like to step up in that direction.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the SE 2.0 TDI seems to be the most popular choice?. Budget probably keeps me in the 08/09 territory, and possibly with higher mileage (but under 100kkm). Although I've seen a few 09's online with under 80k miles. In the used car market there doesn't seem to be a price difference between SE & S-Line models (which is surprising), I've seen both with comparable mileage / year coming in around the same price. How bad is the ride on the S-Line, I hear it can be pretty rough. Compare that to something like an old Focus, I suspect it's still in a different league?

I have driven a SE 2.0 TDI and it was much nicer to drive than the Focus, despite it having ridiculous miles on it, the check engine light on, and clearly leaking oil. Not a notion of investing in something like that, but the bottom line is...

If you were looking for A4 (B8)'s right now, sub 2010, what would you be looking out for? SE or S-Line? (I live and commute in the City, with motorway driving, but some rural road driving also is not uncommon). When checking the service history, what's important? (timing belt, water pump, etc).

Also any of you that own an A4 in the same league as the above, what is your experience like?

EDIT: My apologies I've just noticed another similar thread, started on this topic recently. However if anyone wants to comment on my specific questions above, that would be cool tool.

S-Line is nice but they command very big money, so comparing SE to S-Line is not really like for like.

Sport is a nice spec in them, gives you some of the nice S-Line style interior bits without the price premium of the full S-Line.

Take a look at the UK listings as well for comparison purposes. You will also find (if buying from a dealer) that many of them have simply imported the UK cars themselves, paid the VRT and are selling them on.

If you don't mind the risk or hassle yourself then you could do the same.

I bought an A5 Quattro S-Line last year and we have an A4 S-Line as well. The suspension is a bit firmer, but ride is tighter and car is lowered also so handling will be better around the bends (less body roll).
