Hey guys I will be traveling to the rep of Congo this week and I have a prescription for 40 Malarone tablets. I will only be in a Malarial zone two days max so I think this is too much. Either way I might go for the full forty tablets to be safe. I'm not asking should I or any sort of medical advice I just want to inquire does anyone know how much they are per tablet roughly and would they be cheaper in the Congo?

Jesus man, I think it could be close to €150 for 40 tabs.

Thanks dude I actually expected them to be a lot more than that! Expensive stuff though. Especially consider my shots cost 200 euro and the visa is close to three hundred dollars!

I would suggest discussing with your doctor or pharmacist how many tablets you would need for your time in any malarial areas and then get that many dispensed.

It could be more though. I used Larium a few times and was told that they were €3-€4 a tablet, Malarone is meant to be dearer, so I was just giving you a rough figure.

Hope it doesnt cost ya too much....enjoy The Congo!

Get some Um Bongo into ya dude!

I got Malarone for 11 days in East Africa and it cost me E90, so I'd say you'd be looking at lot more than E150.

My doctor here is giving me different advice from the doctor who I will be liaising with over there. The doctor over there says I will need twelve tablets max.

Thanks Mel. Was it Tanzania you were in by any chance and was it a malarial zone?

Typical regime is 1 tab for one day before risk area, 1 tab for each day in the risk area and 1 tab a day for 7 days after you leave the risk area.

That is the typical regime - not necesarily the regime for everyone - so your situation may differ so ask your doc.

Thanks Drk! I did ask my doc and he said the forty tablets would be safest. He's a very good GP and I suppose he just wants me to be safe!

This..... I spend a lot if time in malarial regions and this is all I've ever done. Save yourself a few quid.

Don't go thanking me yet. Many still advise that 28 are taken after you leave the risk area which I presume where your other doctor is coming from. I'm too long out of the game to be advising you as to what the right answer is (and obviously it's prohibited to offer advice in this forum....)

That's cool Rob I apologize! I would be happy enough to know the price per tablet if anyone knows.

There is no such thing as a "price per tablet", for two reasons:

    1. Each pharmacy has its own price (there cannot be a 'set price', if there was, that would be an illegal cartel)
    2. There are two elements to the price you pay; a price related to the price of the tablets and a dispensing fee. The fee will be the same whether you get one tablet or 40, while the cost-related part of the price will vary according to what the med is and how many you're getting.

I can't remember exactly what they cost, but you can get 31 on the DPS scheme which will be capped at €144 max, then get the rest. I'm not certain that will be beneficial for you but I think it will be, especially if you need other bits like antibiotics, antihistamines, steroid creams, inhalers etc.

Call into your pharmacist and ask them the cheapest way of doing it. If you don't have a DPS card you can emergency register just bring your PPS number.

Edit: you probably have it sorted by now, I just realised it was a few days ago you posted this.

Got 15 malarone tablets for 49 euros in boots baggot street. Think it's even cheaper the more you get.

    Hey,

Just contacted 2 pharmacy's. One quoted 133euro for 30 tablets.
Boots quoted 90ish but also said there is a new Irish company making the exact same product for 47euro for 30.

Irish Medical Board have them first on the list for the malaria tablets.
