I'm going to session 2 of CTYI this year and I've never been before. I'm really nervous because as far as I know people have their little groups and stuff, and I'm afraid I won't make any friends and will be a loner for three weeks :( any advice to calm my nerves? :(

Don't stress, I met a lot of the CTYI groups as an undergrad last year and they all seemed like a nice friendly bunch, very chatty and seemed like they were there to make new friends as much as anything.

I'm sure some will take you under their wing no problem.

My daughter goes to ctyi and loves it, she says they are her second family. It's great, very friendly, everyone is in the same boat, away from home and they really look after each other.
Hope you have a great time.

You wont experience this until you go to college but when you go to CTYI you are going to be in a big group of like minded people. Its not like in secondary school where there are 3 of 4 people are into the same things as you are.

I see the CTYI students around the engineering building and they are all in big groups and there always seems to be some sort of group activity organised. I just fail to see a scenario where you will be on your own.

Everyone will be in the same boat as you, introduce yourself to people and don't wait to be approached as everyone will be shy. :)

Cheers everyone! I'll try to keep this in mind and not have a mini heart attack every time someone speaks to me :P

You might want to read this. It is all their traditions, they are very particular about them. All the kids are lovely in it, along with the TA's, RA's, Instructors and general staff. Enjoy it and well done for getting into it.

This was helpful but also a bit frightening haha, and thank you :)

Don't worry OP, I've seen a lot of ctyi groups around campus every summer, each group has an assistant who looks after the group and afaik it's all very organised, everything is scheduled and there are activities set out for the group so you really don't have to worry about feeling left out.

    Man, CTYI was awesome...

OP, I was the same as you back in 2003 (Christ, 2003). Then I got there, and it was awesome. I literally gained all my social skills during that thing, and never really left DCU. And most of my friends up until college, I knew from CTYI, or through people I met in CTYI... You get the point.

Most classes do icebreaker type stuff on the first day anyway, be grand. Have a great time. And you will, because I'm pretty sure it's impossible not to :D

I'd launch into a 'back in my day' tirade, but nah. Nice nostalgia trip there though.
