The French Navy had three training ships in Galway over the weekend and they left this morning. Managed to get down to see them leave.

Courtesy ensign on the port side, a navy thing?

First thing I noticed also, thought the photos had been posted 'reversed' untils I saw their numbers. The French fly the courtesy flag (pavillon de courtoisie) on the starboard side, from crosstrees of the forwardmost mast. (don't see why the Navy would/should be different?) It should be smaller than their ensigns, which it isn't, so that is wrong also. Courtesy flags are relatively new, introduced mid 1800's.
Moored they have jacks correctly flown on foredecks. Strange place for their ensigns (afterdeck, not from the stern) and on steaming out they appear to have no ensigns flying (A751) even though the courtesy flag is still flying.

Sloppy seamanship, guys lounging around on the foredeck, fenders still out. Then again, the French for 'ready about!' is 'A Dieu va!' (+/- 'with the grace of god.')

nitpicking nothing, good seamanship is good seamanship.

I'd have been lashed out of it as a cadet if I'd hoisted the courtesy ensign on the port side and not even all the way up. And it was always the gadget who got the job...

Agreed. When we used to sail to Gent I would have had to have the Dutch and Belgian flags at the ready. Have the Dutch one flying on arrival at the locks at Terneuzen, then change over to the Belgian flag when crossing the border. Would not have done to arrive in Gent with the Dutch flag flying! Maybe the skipper was a bit anal, but it was the right thing to do.
