Commercial Van with No DOE and Tax Out Question

    Hi,

My brother, who has emigrated to England, has left a commercial van (Peugeot 307), which has no DOE and Tax is out. DOE expired six weeks ago and tax is out since 12/12, so six months out of tax.

He wants me to sell if off for him and he will give me a portion of sale price, but how am I going to do this??

I want to get it DOE tested so I can sell it at a much better price, but with no insurance and no tax how do I go about this??

For insurance, can I transfer my car insurance over to this vehicle for a day or two to sort the insurance side of things? or is this possible?

Then, with tax out, can I still get the van doe tested?

He bought it off the company he worked for, it was a commercial van then, so I guess it is still a commercial vehicle now??

What do I need to do? Thanks in advance

call your insurance company, most will not allow you to transfer from private to commercial though. You could have it brought to a DOE centre on a tow truck ?

You don't need tax or insurance to DOE it.

you only need the log book for DOE, but getting the van there is the issue with insurance.

Maybe not, but you need both to drive to the DOE centre.

OP, are you near the DOE centre? Maybe if you ask them could they drive the van in for the test on the garage insurance. You might have to give them a few quid to do this. But I would say you will need to get it lifted there on a tow truck.

Yes thats exactly what I was thinking, I cannot legally drive this van back to the DOE garage with tax, insurance and doe out.

Its 20 miles to nearest DOE centre so its a good bit away.

Would I be taking a major chance by doing that?? and suppose it fails the DOE when I get it there, and need to drive back home again, once again illegally, what are the consequences if caught?? Could I just tell the guards I just wanted to get it DOE'd, would they understand????

And also I am not going to pay tax on it just for the sake of getting it back to the DOE centre!!

So I guess my only way is a tow truck?? Anyone else any ideas?? How much roughly would a tow truck cost??, its 20 miles to doe centre.

And how much does a doe test cost? and if it fails, how much for a re-test? Thanks

Any Insurance you get will not be valid either.

The Gardai will not turn a blind eye, for your sake and others. Just say your involved in an accident on the way, no Insurance, no TAX & Van not considered to be road worthy, as in no DOE. The would have a field day with you, even if the accident was not your fault.

You can not tax it without a DOE. Your in a catch 22 here.

Do you know anyone with a trailer that the van might fit on? Or someone with open insurance that would cover commercial driving. Did you ring you insurance company to see if they would cover you for the day? No harm asking.

Yeah you are right, not worth taking that risk.

No I'm afraid I do not, but I will try and locate somebody if I can, never though of open insurance so thanks for that suggestion.

I don't think I can switch over insurance as somebody else mentioned.

Would someone with open insurance be able to legally drive it to the DOE centre /garage???

I have trade insurance so can drive anything Insured or not.
Obviously Tax as stated is issue but that has never been a problem when only bringing to test or just bought.

Some commercial insurances will cover you to drive another commercial vehicle(up to 3.5 tonnes I think)even if it has no insurance.Know that my own policy allows this.

Before anyone asks ;yes have checked this twice with the broker (second time got the lady in the office to ring the company and confirm it whilst I was there).

My own policy is a standard policy on a landcruiser, no fleet ins.,extras etc etc
so might be worthwhile asking a neighbour with a commercial insurance if they have this and getting them to bring it for you.

I am insured to drive any commercial too but not if they don't have a DOE. My insurance company wont pay out unless the van has a cert of road worthiness from the tax office. They told me a DOE pass certificate isn't even enough. A mechanic trade policy might be different.

You don't need tax to drive to an NCT centre for a test, you'd want a right anal Guard if he wouldn't apply the same to a DOE.
