Importing car from UK

I lived in the UK for the last 4 years and have owned my car here for last 3 years. I will shortly be moving back to Ireland.

Do you have to pay VRT on every car that is brought into Ireland from the UK, even if you have owned it for a prolonged period?

I have read through this information and it appears so, but I figured I would check with people here in case I have missed something.

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/moving_to_ireland/coming_to_live_in_ireland/importing_car_into_ireland.html

So is the protocol for importing:

    Get SORN in the UK

Register and pay VRT after NCTS appointment

    Tax/insure

    Done?

Any advice from anyone who has been through this process would be appreciated

You have the process roughly right but not sure why you think you would have VRT to pay as you're changing residence and have owned the car for so long.

Well that's what I thought - as I've owned he car for so long, I shouldn't need VRT. But as I look at official info on VRT I dont see any exemption for this. Is there paperwork you need to get this exemption? Thanks for help

It's on the link you originally cited. Relevant part copied below.

    Certain disabled drivers
People who have owned and used their vehicles abroad for more than 6 months and who are moving permanently to Ireland
People posted to Ireland as part of the diplomatic corps
NOTE: If you are moving to Ireland and are among those exempt from paying VRT you cannot sell your vehicle for more than 12 months after the vehicle is registered.

Do not do sorn in UK, fill out log book that you are exporting the car

Take photocopies of everything too, logbook (v5) UK address, ferry tickets etc.

And don't forget to register the car vrt etc. shortly after arriving here
