to be sure.........protect your interests........but politely ask the dealer is it ok for you to have your own mechanic to look over and test the car. If he says yes, he's nothing to hide, if he says no, then - well.........draw your own conclusions!

Yes and no, some do and some don't.
However it is good practice if you're not good with cars to have it inspected by a mechanic before purchase.

Often dealers will give you some warranty which is good. The warranty might not extend to everything so it's still a good idea to have someone inspect it.

Wish I did when I bought from a dealer.

Its probably best not to advertise that you are bringing a mechanic (just say you have a mate who would like to look over it or something to that effect), but its definitely advisable to get someone to give you a second opinion on a used car, even from a dealer.

And if he is the sort to have his nose put out of joint at the suggestion that you dont trust him then you might end up weakening your bargaining power.

not really, cos it'd never even get to the bargaining stage. If he has an issue with anyone take their own mechanic to check a car, then thats it......simply NEXT! Just flushing him out early is all.......as I said, if he has nothing to hide.... People ask me all the time can they bring their own mechanic, and I say yes - please, by all means........and a lot of the time, they arrive with no mechanic.....they're just testing me ;) ......but I've nothing to hide so I don't mind.

What you'd save, you may lose in the long run, and then some!

How? Im not saying dont bring a mechanic; Im simply saying dont necessarily make a big deal about the fact that you are bringing a mechanic.

Midlands, why would you potentially walk away from a good car just because the salesman is a bit of a gob****e? You might still end up getting a great car at a decent price if you just play along a bit.

I always let a dealer know that I'm bringing a mechanic. What's the problem? You are about to hand over thousands of euro for something. If they say no then they are only hiding something.

FWIW I always bring someone who can check all the fault codes etc.

You can just ask here for recommendations?
Or arrange with a local garage to take car there for inspection. Sometimes the seller will drop car off at garage too.
