    Hi all

If anyone could shed some light on this issue I would be eternally grateful.

I am entering my final and fourth year of a PhD in September. I got half of my fees paid in my second and third year (2011/12 and 2012/13). I never received any grant before this. I paid for my degree and my Masters. I rang today to see whether the council would be sending out my renewal form soon and was told that because I have done 4 years postgraduate study (my masters and 3 years of a PhD that I am not entitled to it this year).
I thought that this only applied if I had been receiving a grant for those 4 years and said this so they're going to call me back with an answer. In the meantime I've read citizensinformation and Googled this but can't find this rule written anywhere. Can anyone point me to where it is written please? Has anyone any info on this rule? Maybe I missed it.

It's a massive bombshell to have dropped on me as I enter into my final year and I would be very grateful if anyone knows anything about this or knows where it is written in the rules. Many thanks.

I'll just leave this up in case anyone else has the same problem. Fyi - I'm entitled to the partial fees again thankfully. However, if I had been admitted under the new SUSI system that came in last year I wouldn't as under the new system apparently it's 4years postgrad max whether you received a grant or not. Wishing you all the very best your academic endeavours and hope you get the financial assistance required.

    See here

    http://www.susi.ie/Susi/media/susi/SI-159-of-2013-Student-Grant-Scheme-2013_Final.pdf?ext=.pdf
    (c) Postgraduate courses:
—Grant aid for postgraduate study shall be limited to a maximum of
    four years in total.
—Account is taken of all previous attendance and attainment at post
graduate level when considering grant aid entitlement for post
graduate study, regardless of whether a person previously received
    a grant or not.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thank you Mangosalsa. The reason I didn't see that is because I registered 2 years before SUSI so was reaidng the old rules for the old system that I'm registered under. Under the old scheme it was only if you had been receiving the grant for 4 years according to the Dept. of Education
