I have built a few decks before using 4x2 for the subframe but with a new deck i am plannng 1/2 of the frame will sit on a concrete path and the other half will cover the grass but my question is i already have a supply of 3x2 timber that i was going to use for the sub frame, is this size sufficient enough or do i really need 4x2 minimum?

3 x 2 on edge should be ok for a Subframe, just place them closer together and build it Raft style. I'd go with 400mm to 450mm Centres max.
