Cheap old diesel banger

Thinking of getting a B5 Audi A4 1.9tdi ('96-'01) as a runaround. I do a fair bit of mileage most weeks as the girlfriend lives a while away and I'm in the country so it's a 20 mile round trip to town etc.
Plus I might end up commuting from Kerry to Dublin in the next few years.

Problem is I'm broke! Looking to spend 1500 or less on the car.

Can anyone suggest a better car for this price bracket? I'd prefer a pre '04 non common rail/hdi engine as I might explore making biodiesel in the future.

I would be interested in a 306 or 406 alright but no information online about running bio in the XUD engine!

bazz I'm looking into using biodiesel, I want to avoid straight veg oil, loads of hassle especially in winter.

The XUD with the Bosch fuel pump should be grand with biodiesel, I'd imagine the Lucas fuel pumped version would be fine too though it can be iffy with veg oil.

Good man! Have you run one on it yourself?

No, but a neighbour runs a XUD 405 on veg oil with the bosch pump. Should be grand with biodiesel. Ran a normal Xantia with diesel and they're a reliable engine.

What kind of real world mpg do XUD's return? On a budget, would they a better bet than a HDI equivalent for big mileage?

Right. That Avensis 2.0TD would have a Denso pump. The engine itself is alright but a pig to service and has a nasty tendancy to crack head so avoid it. The pump will handle veg easilly but in all honesty avoid anything like that, quite frankly rubbish.

Get an XUD with a bosch pump. With a Lucas avoid leaving veg in the pump when stopping or it will get gummed up. Bosch internals are much stronger and better built, different way in distributing diesel and pressurising it all helps where the Lucas falls.

As for mpg expect 50+ when driven handy, 45 with motorway driving.

Much easier to ring out extra reliable power from an XUD too. With a simple turn of a screw mine shot up from 90 bhp to 115 bhp, other posters can verify and have a dyno to prove. Turned up far higher since

    Yours sincerely

Nope! I've leaned towards internal mods instead so there's far less smoke than before but twice the fun with a sub 10 second 0-100 while still averaging 45mpg over 550 miles :D

    The price!!

Driving a polo now and to be fair I wouldn't mind sticking with VW as she's been really reliable... and this is a 1 litre petrol with 192,000 miles on the clock! But passats and golfs seem very expensive!
Gotten very keen on the 306 now actually. Hard to find a td with 5 doors though!

    1500

Owner is dreaming a good bit....

    430

    Needs NCT

Both have Lucas pumps. Both may suffer axle trouble....

A much safer bet would be....
    1400

All 406 1.9's are Bosch pumped. I can vouch for this particular one as I looked at it already ;)

Yeah I saw the sedan but as it's done up I figured it's probably had the balls driven out of it. As for the other one I want to try and steer clean of cars with no nct... if they're saying the car is fine but they don't get the nct done then something is probably wrong!

Didn't know about the pumps in 406s! Thanks for that! How can you tell whether those 306s have bosch or lucas without looking!

Also if the 406 is so good why didn't you buy it :P

He already owns about 80% of the 406's registered in the country :-D

True that.... 5 doors are quite rare to find! Most sedans I've seen are non turbos too, rare to see a DT one

The year. Those ones are phase 2's, each with either the K03/GT15 turbo. Earlier cars had bigger more laggy turbos and some came with Bosch pumps, harder to distinguish.

    Or the build thread....

Found a nice looking 5 door yesterday, low mileage and decent price... turned out to be a straight diesel, sickener! Might end up just going with a straight even though they are supposed to be slower than a bus! Probably not much different from the polo though!

So all the phase 2s have the lucas pumps then?

She looks well in fairness! Looks like it took a good bit of work though!

The nad will be quite slow, noisy and not very frugal..... Worse if it's an 1868cc version! That's ph3 though, coloured bump strips are the giveaway there

All ph2's have the Lucas pump as the semi ECU pump was never available in them, the crossover being 1996. All bosch pumps in 306's before that were full mech with no potentiometer or ecu control.

Yeah, a small bit of work went into mine.... :pac:

So say I got a phase 2 and ran it on biodiesel and the pump went bang, it wouldn't be much trouble swapping out for a bosch nicked off a phase 1? I'd nearly just go for a phase 2 if I found it and buy a bosch pump as soon as I started running bio. Or else just go for the 406! Extra room might come in handy

A pump change aint to difficult, just time consuming. The studs on the bracket would need to be moved to the other holes, some pipework to be changed and the wiring to the solenoid altered slightly. Time consuming rather than difficult

406 is a far comfier car but you don't get the handling..... I still prefer them over 306's though :D
