It looks a bit like a H/T lead connecting the distributor to the ignition coil. Is it an electrical component (flexible) or a rod (inflexible) of some kind?

Nope it is solid hard grade plastic at ends and metal rod in between

I have been advised it part of a transmission, however all image searches have proved futile

It could be, some items look kinda similar

There is a button on both ends which you cant see and it goes in when pressed, it broke off on one side.

Unlikely. Gear links are flexible (cable type).

I found it on the side of the road and in a father jack like moment estimated it was from
a 1996 toyota coralla, and now i need to know what part it is.

Have to point out your username is tedtime and your talking of father jack moments?
    hmm...

So you found a piece of something and assume it's off a corolla transmission. Any particular reason?

I smell something fishy about this thread, not to mention only 7 posts..
