Apply online

I'm in my local welfare office right now with 90 people in the queue ahead of me, and the reception closed for the next 2 hours for lunch. All I want to do is make an appointment to claim JSB and there's signs all over the place saying"you can now apply online at welfare.ie.". However, when I go to the site, it says I can only use it if I have a transactional ID number. The signs say nothing about that and there's no-one I can ask. Can anyone here help? Or do I have to queue for the next few hours just to get that number?

I think you picked one of the busiest days of the year as a lot of school workers would have been in offices today making their claims for the summer. I was looking at the online service and it states that they will send you a TIN when you long on for the first time. How did you get on? Did you get sorted?

I forgot about the teachers. After I'd been sitting there for 40 minutes, a woman came out with forms and said anyone waiting to make an appointment could leave their email address and they'd be emailed an appointment. So I did that, in good faith, but 2 days later, I haven't heard so much as a peep and am back sitting in the fresh claims section, waiting for them to reopen after their 2 hour lunch break. And the ticket machine is turned off so I don't even have a ticket number.

TBH they dont have 2 hour lunch breaks...the office is closed for 2 hrs. I think you should have applied online and then you would have got your TIN number to proceed with the online application.

I tried but it wouldn't work for me because I was on my phone and I had no internet at home. Then I was promised they'd email me an appointment, so I waited for that, assuming it was coming. My home internet didn't get up and running until this evening, so it was actually quicker to just go back into the office and queue for another hour.

Regardless of what they're doing, it's frustrating that they only operate to the public for 4 hours a day. It's also frustrating when you give up your place in the queue on the promise of an appointment by email that never materialises. The whole experience is frustrating in the extreme because it could be streamlined so much. I know the staff aren't to blame, and they're just doing their job. It's the service as a whole that's flawed, but that's a discussion for a different thread :).

Thanks for the help anyway; it might be useful for others.

I know its frustrating. If you have any suggestions that could streamline the system you should email them to the Ministers office.

You would also need to check to see if your office provides this service as not all offices do.
