Starting a new job at Intel in Leixlip and need to be there for 7 a.m. Im not driving at the minute so I've to use public transport. I live in Dundalk so was wondering what is the best route to take? To get me there on time every morning?

Depends on where the job is.

But a train can get you to Lexlip where intel is.

And you can get a bus there to HP.

Or take a bus from Dundalk to city centre and bus 66/66a/66b will get you to Lexlip.

It's intel I'm starting with, I don't know of any other route to take bar going to Dublin which means leaving my place in Dundalk at 4 to get the 4.30 bus to Dublin for 6 a.m.

I think it is impractical and you should move nearer to work.

The first train to Connolly arrives at 06.58, ruling that out. A connecting train would get you to Leixlip Louisa at 07:41.

Bus Éireann route 100x departs Dundalk Long Walk Bus Station at:
    * 0330 (to airport, arriving 04:40). You then have to get the Airport Hopper 767 service, direct to Intel) leaving at 0445 (tight connection) or Aircoach + Irish Rail to arrive at 06:14 or 06:52 or the Airport Hopper 777 service to Liffey Valley and then Dublin Bus route 66 that will get you to Intel by 07:03. Note that the Airport Hopper 767 only started today and the timetable may be subject to change.
    * 0430 (to IFSC arriving at 06:00 or Georges Quay arriving at 06:02). You then have to be at Connolly station by 06:10 (tight connection) to get to Leixlip Louisa Bridge by 06:39. Or Pearse Srreet (Trinity College) by 06:15 (tight connection) for Dublin Bus route 66 that will get you to Intel by 07:03.

Will you be working the long shifts? What will you do when you have weekend shifts?

Driving may seem more practical, but it is about 101km each way with 4 tolls per day.

Hopefully I won't have to do this for very long, I'm waiting for my licence to arrive which shouldn't take any more than 3weeks hopefully. All the options rely on the busses being there on time and leaving very small room for error..

Book a guest house for a few nights a week for the next three weeks, see if they'll give you a bulk discount (may be difficult as it is high season).

Still, if you are doing the 10 hour shifts, adding that much driving can't be nice.

Moving or staying away from Dundalk isn't an option unfortunately. I've to be in leixlip for 7, start time 7.30- 16.00. Even if I could get to Dunboyne for 6 a.m I could get the shuttle bus to Intel?

On your first day in intel, ask about car pooling - it happens here, but don't know of anyone from Dundalk doing it.

Yea there's a group that comes from Dundalk that I was hoping to get a lift with but turns out the car is full. Is there any from drogheda do you know? I've the induction in the morning so ill get talking to someone I'm sure

The only practical way is driving or renting a place.
There is a car pool section of the internal website where you might be able to link up with somebody (I know there were a few Drogheda people anyway). Using public transport would be a nightmare from Dundalk unless there was a train that suited you via Connolly.
Alternatively you could ask about an adjusted working day where you start and finish later thereby using the train Victor mentioned below. Intel are usually fairly flexible and will allow this where possible.
Congrats on the job. They are a good company to work for.

HR might point you in the right direction when doing your induction.

No offence, but are the answers in the two threads you already started not answer enough?

And really you should be posting in commuting forum.

No harm in asking. New to boards and couldn't find a commuting forum

No harm in asking at all - but no need to ask three times in three different threads!

Looks dicey - I'd be thinking about a B&B for the first week or two while you suss out a carpool with a co-worker. Given that Intel put on a bus from M3 Parkway (from another thread) I imagine they encourage that sort of thing.

OP - this really is an impossible commute - for one you will be shattered every day, and secondly, the connections are far too tight.

There are only two services from Dublin that will get you to Intel in time to start work for 07:00. These are the trains from Connolly at 05:27 and 06:10 which arrive at Louisa Bridge station at 06:01 and 06:39 respectively.

The first 66 at 06:10 is not due to pass outside Intel until 07:00 so that will be too late.

So, you would be getting the 100X at 04:30 to arrive at the IFSC at 06:00 and running to Connolly for the 06:10 train. If it takes you 30 minutes to get to the bus station at Dundalk, that's almost a 3 hour commute each way.

For that reason alone, this idea is madness. The connection at Connolly is too tight - if the bus is late by even 5 minutes - you'll miss the train and you will be late for work.

Add to that the cost of buying a Giant Hop weekly ticket, and you are looking at ludicrous amounts of money.

As someone else suggested - initially find a B & B and then somewhere to rent nearby to Intel. That sort of commute by public transport would render you completely useless to any employer.

I understand its a crazy commute but it will only be a temperary one. I'm trying to work out all the options, I just don't want to pass up this job! Moving isn't really an option just yet due to my lease in my current house, but it's nearly up anyway. My heads fried trying to find a solution!

I appreciate that OP - but that connection is far too tight to be reliable. You simply cannot be guaranteed that will work.

That is even before taking into account that a 6 hour commute per day is just lunacy.

Take this from someone who found commuting 3 hours per day for over 3 years as draining enough.

Bear in mind also that you will have to get 2 separate tickets - one for Bus Eireann and one for Irish Rail costing €234 and €122 per month respectively. OK, if Intel participates in Taxsaver, that will reduce, but it's still a lot of dosh.

Taking the length of the commute and the additional cost involved (2 separate tickets), you really would be better off paying for a room somewhere nearby even for a temporary period.

The only other option is to get the Bus Eireann bus at 03:30 to connect into the Airport Hopper at 04:45 at Dublin Airport (arriving Intel at 05:25), but that is only a 5 minute connection - again far too tight. The next Airport Hopper to Leixlip is not for 2 hours. Again this will require two tickets.

I'm afraid they are the only options.

    Hi there WillM87,

    Welcome to Boards.ie :)

I've merged your two threads and also moved your (merged) thread from Travel Reports & Reviews to the Commuting & Transport forum where it would be better suited.

Gotta agree with the other posters - the commute is pretty much impossible.

Also, judging by the fact that you're starting work at 7am, am I safe to assume you're going to be working on shift? That'll mean you'll be starting at 7am on Sundays sometimes and there is no public transport that will get you to Leixlip for 7 on a Sunday.
You also have to look at the return journeys if you're working nights!
