Have tried to search but nothing coming up about this. The Downloads folder in 10.8.4 appears to be locked in some way. I can open the folder and open and read files etc. but I can't sort files.

In list view the Name, Date Modified, Size and Kind bar is greyed out. It's not possible to sort items by size or date etc.. Anyone any idea how to alter this behaviour ?

While in the folder in the Finder, go View menu > View Options. Set "Arrange By" to "None". If this is set to anything else it deactivates the sorting columns.

Thanks Prof, had a feeling it was something that simple. Why were those restrictions imposed in the first place ! Anyway, all is good with the world and harmony restored to Chez ZENER. Thank you :)

Just looking now and there's a little button-menu in every Finder window that offers the same Arrange By options. It's possible you accidently clicked in it, setting it to arrange by name or something. I'm pretty sure this button was only introduced in 10.7 or 8, but the option itself has always been available via the View menu.

Yep !! there it is ! Pretty sure it was that way after the upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion. Maybe the previous owner had selected it ?!

Thought it was some security setting that didn't make sense initially but it's the same on my MBP which came with 10.8 ! Anyway it's sorted now.

    Thanks again.
