Just curious, is there a grace period on car insurance? (when it's out of date)

I am! I was just thinking about it as I saw a news article. Last year I realised on the morning it was out. I forgot and had to ring them to renew over the phone, previously they used to send a letter saying if you don't cancel before 14 days we renew automatically. This covered me, although I suppose I could be done on failure to display, which is less serious.

I'm working in the legal field and I know it's very hard to escape a ban, but I was looking online to see if there are any cases where someone forgets and escapes the ban? I just came across a post on the internet (irish site) regarding the grace period which I had never heard of. I suppose that may be valid where you have accepted the renewal but not got the money in?

The only "grace period" I have ever seen was Quinn not cancelling until a few days after the expiry date in case of non-payment of an auto-renewal.

There is absolutely no provision in law for driving uninsured and anything is entirely at the discretion of the insurer.

That must have been it, as I was Quinn who transferred to Hibernia. Quinn used to automatically roll it on I thought. I know it's not up to them to keep reminding you, but I know I got a terrible fright when I copped it but I caught it in time, the morning of the first day out.

Don't worry, it's a question from curiosity only, I'm fully insured, taxed, Nct'd and licenced! I know most people caught seem to have no insurance for months / no intention of getting any, I was just wondering if anyone got caught a day or two out and hadn't realised, which would be a serious bummer if you got a ban

    Edit: Found one http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/twink-fined-for-having-no-car-insurance-590179.html

To be honest it's not driving ban or court case with fine to pay which should be bothering anyone who drives without insurance. Those are small possible consequences.

If you crash and cause couple of million euros worth of damage, then this might mean real trouble.

I have a friend who works for Axa. They give a grace period of approximately a week. It is pending payment but they will honor this weather they have heard from the customer or not in relation to the due payment.

Mrs Nut just got her renual from these saying if she does nothing it will just roll over and the dd will continue as usual, only they nearly doubled the price and she can get a quote on line similar cover less than half what axa want.
They must make millions from people just doing nothing so it's well worth their while to give the odd week her and there.
I wonder how it would work out if you wrecked someone else's car and were late with your payment would the week still be honoured.
