I have this car and wondering does it have a belt or chain and could I check myself or would I need a mechanic for that.

Timing belt. It is due to be changed now if it has never been changed before due to the age of the belt (regardless of mileage).

how much would this cost on 06 1.6 petrol jetta? main dealer says €379.

Same dealer tried to charge me €279 last week for front brake pads and disks - which thanks to this forum's advise I got done minus the unnesessary disks for €75

We charge €260 for the timing belt kit and water pump job on the 1.6 8v engine.

I'm in Limerick - your price sounds good. Main dealer also said it is due at 90k km. Lots of different opinions but this was their service manager and he showed me a screen with service intervals - said "visual inspection at 90000km". My car is 06 with 84k on clock so nearly there. previously Elm motors Limerick and due service about now I think too. window sticker says 90000km next too

If the car is 2006 and the belt has never been changed previously then it is definitely due now. You should be able to get it done locally for similar money, I would say we are about the average price for an independent garage.
