I'm not sure what one to pick. Can I put some 10w40 in for a top up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

According to here it is 5W-40.

    http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectionbodycopy.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7073092

But I'm not a mechanic so cannot advise.

Heading to Dublin in ten minutes or so. Just want to top it up

Putting the wrong grade of oil in is almost as bad as putting none in. Pop into a motor factors and ask them.

Opel recommend a 5w30 synthetic oil for that car, but 10w40 as a top up will suffice for now.

I can get 5l for 30 euro of castrol mag. Well get in during the week.

    5w30 is ideal.
10w40 will suffice in non freezing weather.
Any oil is better than no oil!

She normally goes to the main dealers for the oil change 120 for the hole lot including other bits that they do as part of the service.

I thought I would it myself for a change but the brother says it should still go to the dealers

If you're anyway in doubt, the garage is indeed the best bet. And 120 for an oil and filter change with all the checks around is decent enough value.

I have no problem doing the job. Sure she can bring it again for a look over.

I thought you were just topping it up?
Now you're on about doing a service?
Just checking coz while I said 10w40 would be ok for a top up I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a full oil change. You MUST use the correct 5w30 (GM longlife spec) if yer doing the proper service.

Agreed with turbostan. Many Chevy Kalos and Lacettis needed their heads done after their valves stuck because the gaps were too small to let enough of the thicker 10w40 through. Opels would be the same so for a full change Id go 5w30 or 40. Be easier on fuel too.

5w30 will be grand. I think the only difference between it and 5w40 is that the 40 is thicker than the 30 at operating temperature. So I'd go with 30.

I may get it later this week. 5litre for 30 euros is good. Castrol mag as well

I got the 5w 30 oil today. but didn't get a chance to do it, HAD TO GO TO athlone so popped into opel and the service department just to make sure I had the right oil. Guy said You can either use 5w30 or 10w40. He said that if the w10 40 oil was already in the car you can't change the grade of oil.

I have since checked my mothers receipts from the last few time she got the car serviced and w10 40 semi was put into the car.

Don't worry, switching is entirely possible. My laguna was serviced with 10w40 before I had it. First service i got to do on it I put 5w30 in it. It also had a french/euro A1 spec on it. Let the old oil out, Put the new different oil in, changed filter etc. Car didnt run better or worse but over the last 45000 km and 3 services theres been a consistent reduction in fuel consumption and it burns almost no oil in the last 3000 km of each interval whereas up to a half litre disappeared in 10w40.
Mixing? Not the best but any oil is better thsn no oil.
Changing the oil? Yes you can switch and I assure you there'll be no adverse effects whatsoever!:)

I think I well bring it back for the other grade oil. Unless others on here say it is ok to use the 5w30 even though 10w40 has been used since day one

No worries man. 10w is a lot less expensive anyway. Imma hit the hay now so good luck to ye!

It works out the same price. Both are castrol mag.

Anyone else think I should keep using w10 40 oil

    Unless it's burning oil I'd switch to 5w 30

Well I not damage the car by changing the grade of oil after all these years.

Nope. The better quality the oil, the better for the engine. If it was my car I'd use fully synt 5w 30.

I know that is what should be used. But Opel have been putting in 10w 40 oil since she got car the new.

Just went to the local garage and they 5w30 should be used in the car not 10w40. I also rang opel in galway and they said 5w30 oil is to be used in 06 and over. Not sure why opel in Athlone are using 10w40 oil

Probably to keep costs down. There isn't anything you can do about it now but I would switch to the proper 5w 30. Have you a record of what oil was used at all previous services, if so hang onto them in case anything happens in the future but no point in worrying about it now as it can't be undone.

YA I had said some where here that it has been w10 40 used every time she got it serviced by opel in athlone
