    Hi Guys,
Im looking to build a media desktop, as my macbook pro is too crap to even properly run pro-tools..

The main focus of the dekstop would be Audio Editing, but i'd like to be able to do some video editing and use Adobe CS. Perhaps the odd bit of gaming too.

I dont have the biggest budget ever, so hopefully 700 can get a semi decent set up.

Thanks, in advance for your help.

    1. What is your budget? [€700]
    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming (perhaps war z, call of duty...gaming not that a huge priority)/Audio+video editing/Internet]
    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes]
    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? no
    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]
5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]
5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1440x900] [will upgrade to duel monitors at some point]
    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/etc.]
    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [not sure]
    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]
    9. When are you purchasing? [after august]

Only thing I'd question is that PSU. Reliable?

Would he not be better off skimping on the graphics card to get more RAM?

I figured 16GB of RAM would be better over powerful graphics for editing

It depends on what he's editing. Only he can know that. More info would be nice. An Nvidia card boosts render times on a lot of programs by a large amount. He also said he wants to do some gaming. A 650ti is still a budget card.

I don't see any issue with the psu. It has a 3 year warranty and that system won't use much power power at all.

It's not even 80+ certified though. I'd sooner go with something like this:

Not really. Any software would only use up to a predetermined amount of ram during a session dependant of the software's requirements. You'd be better off investing in the graphics card.

My dad does a bit of editing and all the forums he uses have the same general feedback.

Oh, nice to know. Not that I plan on editing anything any time soon! :P

I had just read on a couple of occasions when people recommend 16GB of RAM that you would only need that much on a media editing computer. So that's actually not true at all? So nobody really needs 16GB? :pac:

Just don't go thinking you'll be able to cut next summers blockbuster on it. ;P

you can change the maximum available ram in the settings of the individual adobe programs, so no it wouldn't be a waste at all. you could quite easily make use of 16gb+ if you are editing full hd and possibly with something like premiere pro and after effects open simultaneously. opencl could be just as powerful as cuda in the new cs suite but there dont appear to be any benches for it yet, none that i could find for the windows versions anyway

Get at least 16gb. I'm just about to start working on a moving graphics project for today (due tomorrow -- eek!) and just with whatever programs open in the background I'm using 5GB. I often have 20+gb in use, but not today as I'm down to 16gb of ram.

Reason I need 32gb of ram back, reason every media editing build should have more than 16gb ram.

It's totally dependant on the media being edited.

Hi Guys, Thanks for all your help!

In terms of media being edited, it depends... using protools it can range from 5 tracks to 50.

Video editing would be short films/Music Videos and most likely all HD.

In terms of Adobe CS. thats just some small After Effects/Photoshop/Illustrator and Dreamweaver.

Well i would have went with 16gb if the budget allowed but there's no way of squeezing it in. The 2gb version of the 650ti would be better as well for €10 more.

The 8320 would be a better processor as well for €40 more. Another €100 and you could go with the 8320 and 16gb of ram.

If the budget can't be moved the current setup is fine though. I'd maybe pay the extra €10 for the 2gb card still.
