We found last winter when there was snow tracks goin into the composter and knew it was rats and set poision.Lately we have been seeing the odd rat around along the ditch,Any idea how get rid of them?Could lure them out and shoot them but that could mean hours of sitting there waiting.

Personally I haaaaate using poison  The feckers can crawl into any nook and cranny and die, if its in around the house then they can stink for months :(
Birds of prey, cats and dogs can also be harmed by the poison by eating the carcass of the poisoned rat.

Fenn traps mk 4 cost about €12 theyre ideal. Usually if I have any around the yard I shoot them but have traps set constantly as part of my routine. They have to be set in a tunnel which you make from some scraps of wood. You can put out some bait for them if you have an hour or two to spare. Get set up in a safe position and make sure you are comfortable. It can be addictive :o

Our old dog swallowed poison as the feckers decided to bring it outa the pipe he was ok in the end!Might leave out bait and see if its gone if so i will set traps and try shoot them.We had a huge bag of rabbit food in the shed and we didnt notice for months rat droppings at the back of the shed etc.The feckers ate half a 10kg bag!

Thats the trouble with poison , you can lose a valued pet or a good hunting dog. We had the same problem with poultry feed being eaten by rats and grass seed too. If you go to Woodies Diy or some place like that and get one of those flip lid bins and put the bag of feed into it. A combination of regular trapping and lack of feed will soon sort your problem.

As my father used to say "If we have enough rats for you to knock sport out of shooting them , we've got a problem son "
