Favourite Westerns?

One of my favourite ever, Tombstone, is on tonight on BBC1 @ 23.50.

Came out at the same time as Wyatt Earp, unusal for the time and even nowadays to see 2 films on the same subject come out in such proximity to each other.

Wyatt Earp is also a terrific movie in my opinion, but Val Kilmers performance as Doc Holliday in Tombstone just edges it.

Some of my favourite others include The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Wild Bunch, and 3:10 to Yuma.

    Yours?

Thanks for the heads up! Love Tombstone! Favourite though has to be Once Upon a Time in the West. Possibly my favourite film of all time.

The outlaw Josey Wales. Great movie, I prefer it to Unforgiven which is also great but Josey is my favourite.

Watching Tombstone now, really bad form on BBC's part, the quality is atrocious, really bad quality, my missus said it looks like it was shot at the same time as My Darling Clemintine

Just watched Tombstone with my missus the last week :D
I think it has one of the best casts ever, almost everyone in it is great, and even some of the smallest roles are pretty big actors. like the guy that Wyatt slaps around in the oriental is Billy Bob Thornton. you nearly wouldn't even recognise Stephen Lang:

but I think it has to be once upon a time in the west for my favourite ;)

As a rule, I don't like westerns at all, but Tombstone is fantastic. As said, there's an amazing cast and Kilmer is excellent but I love Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo. He plays the part well.

    Love Tombstone

but it has to be Clint's masterpiece "The Unforgiven"

    Little Bill Daggett:

You'd be William Munny out of Missouri. Killer of women and children.

    Will Munny:

That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.

I'm a much bigger fan of the Eastwood westerns than Wayne films, so in no particular order:

    For A Few Dollars More
The Good, The Ugly and The Ugly
    The Outlaw Josie Wales
    Unforgiven

I love the speech Munny gives about killing in Unforgiven:
"It's helluva thing killing a man. You take away all he's got, and all he's ever going to have." Really great writing.

Costner's Open Range from 2003 also deserves a mention especially for that brutal and kinetic extended gunfight at the end.

I though the remake of True Grit was brilliant, especially Matt Damon's performance.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is my favourite, closely followed by The Good,The Bad & The Ugly.

I've not seen the True Grit remake but now you've mentioned it I'll pick it up on dvd when I'm in town :)

Watching Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid as I type this - definitely in my top 5 movies, but I've never considered it a western, more of a buddy movie/love story between two men.

The Searchers for me, the scenery is just incredible.

Unforgiven in 2nd, the final scene is one of my favorite in any movie.

Spoof comedy choice? City Slickers of course! :D

I have to agree. Its one of the most incredible movies ever made. It transcends the western genre and addresses a whole host of issues. Some very subtly. The cinematography is incredible as well. John Fords greatest ever film imo.
