I have to sort out dads netbook running xp. It boots up fine as far as the login screen but after logging in nothing happens. I just see the wallpaper and thats it, I can call up the task manager and there's a few services running but no cpu activity or much other windows activity.

    Any idea's?

Can you try holding the windows button and press R at the same time???
It should bring up the run box...if it does..,type in explorer.exe
    Let us know what happens
It sounds like windows explorer is not starting

Nothing happening when I try that. I can see explorer in the task manager.

Do I have to login as the main user/admin? I don't know dads password and he's not here this minute to log me in.

    ---edit---

Ok, so it does login and it does go to the desktop, it just takes ages! anything I can get to log what might be causing the hangup after login?

Boot into safe mode, usually by pressing F8 as the computer boots will bring up a screen giving options as to what you want to do. Try safe mode and see if it boots into desktop.

Goes into safemode no bother, quicker than a normal boot as well!
