Episodes like this underline the importance of having vehicle recovery insurance over and above the limited scope of that offered by Dolmen/Axa or others.

I have an annual package with German company ADAC which includes full repatriation of the vehicle/passengers in the event of a complete vehicle breakdown anywhere in Europe. €80 per year and worth every penny.

Details for joining ADAC are elsewhere on this forum with a search.

Thanks for that heads-up re ADAC.
Worth joining in particular for the years that you know you will be holidaying in Europe.

    Hi all
I also have the full package with ADAC and would like to know has anyone here used them for repatriation to Ireland.
The rate seems so reasonable and the benifits so good that I fear I must be misunderstanding something somewhere.
All communication is in German which I unfortunately do not understand.Today I got a letter which seems to indicate my policy has been renewed I will keep an eye on my visa statement to check.Having dealt with Irish insurers I just may be a little paranoid.

Also use ADAC since last year, rang AA about similar cover and they were far too expensive and could not offer the same level of service as ADAC. So happy enough, have peace of mind, altho not had to use em yet...fingers crossed.

ZAMBO, I am a member of ADAC for a number of years, the letter is an invoice which you need to pay, it does not happen automatically in my case anyway. You can phone 0049 941 55673 and ask for Barbara Lorenz who has excellent english and will take your payment by card. I had problems a number of years when trying to pay using their normal number. I got this contact from another site see here, very informative. http://www.joysofeuropeancaravanning.co.uk/adacbreakdownservice.htm

    Hi All

Is ADAC specifically for campervans or would it be an alternative to AA cover on cars etc?

Does it cover the person rather than the vehicle? if so, ADAC might be an alternative to AA

Or am I missing something fundamental??

    Cheers

ADAC is a German automobile club with its own rescue setup for Germany and they use the likes of the AA and others if you breakdown outside Germany. It covers you in any vehicle which you are driving anywhere in Europe.

so all in all, if the price was right, why bother with AA car cover in Ireland if this crew will cover u in any vehicle throughout Europe?

Exactly...and dont think AA will even recover a camper or at least one over 3.5t. ADAC will get ur camper home, far better deal and as said above cover is for person so if your in your car ( or passanger) in France or anywhere in europe vehicle will be recovered :-)

So what membership options are people taking out with ADAC? Is it the one for 79.50 single plus membership?

Are these guys that good? Anyone experience of what kind of service they provide?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭RO 06

I signed up earlier to cover myself and wife. Cost €98. was talking to Barbara. Only took 5 mins.
Heading to France on Sunday for 3 weeks so it is peace of mind if it is as good as it says on the tin

its one of the largest automobile organisations in the world with over 18million members and they even have a fleet of 44 helicopters in germany and 4 private jets if you need to be rescued from where ever else.

I needed their services (on the car, not evacuation by air!) in West cork last summer and it didnt cost me a penny.

Perhaps the mods could split this thread so there is a separate one for ADAC

First of all I think the ADAC policy is great for the price however. Rumors of ADACS miraculous repariation policy are greatly exaggerated.

Here is the correct story from another site:
    1. If you breakdown by the roadside and call ADAC they will send mechanic out to you. If he cannot fix the problem he will or arrange to get you transported to a Garage within 80 kms radius (50 miles)

    2. If the garage has to get parts for you they will organise and get them (you will pay for the parts and labour fitting them.)

    3. If the parts ore not obtainable and the vehicle cannot be repaired ADAC will repatriate you back to your Home.

    4. The above is all covered by your ADAC Plus or Partner Plus Policy you must have this level of Insurance.

    5. What is not covered is if there is not a garage within 80 kms (50miles) you would have to pay the extra mileage over this figure.

My danish friend has also pointed out a further clause that if the repatriation costs are more than the value of the vehicle they don't repatriate.

Also if you're in an accident repatriation has nothing to do with ADAC

So the short of it is ADAC may repatriate you in certain, unlikely situations.

Just found the same details as paddy on another site and also reference to a max recovery height of 3.2m, but I think it only applies to recovery.

Here is the actual t&c from the horses mouth:
.Das geschützte Fahrzeug ist im Geltungsbereich Europa aufgrund einer Panne oder eines Unfalles nicht mehr
    technisch fahrbereit, und
    a) der Schaden wurde durch eine Werkstatt festgestellt;
    b) es liegt kein Totalschaden nach § 1 Nr. 2 vor. Der Wiederbeschaffungswert wird vor Leistungserbringung von
uns nach in Deutschland allgemein anerkannten Kfz-Bewertungssystemen festgestellt.
    c) bei einem Schaden in Deutschland kann das geschützte Fahrzeug auch am Tag nach dem Schaden nicht
    wieder technisch fahrbereit gemacht werden;
    d) bei einem Schaden im Ausland wurde das geschützte Fahrzeug so schwer beschädigt, dass eine Instandsetzung im Umkreis von 50 km vom Schadenort innerhalb von 3 Werktagen nicht durchführbar ist und ein

part b) is the clause my danish friend pointed out which basically says 'and the loss is not in excess of the value determined according to german automobile rating systems'

Still its better than the aa cover and great for the price,
