Just had someone come to look at me car, agree on a price, go off to get the money and not bother coming back. No reply from his phone or anything. A simple text or call to say they'd changed their mind would of been proper.

Is this a common thing when selling a car privately?

I thought only a kid would do something so spineless, not a couple in their 30s. Oh well.

It happens a lot. It is just away for them to get away easily because they are not interested in the car and there not in the mood for bargaining or they might feel the seller is dodgy.

He haggled on a price, got a good deal, shook on it then left to "get the money". Surely its not that hard to say no thanks I'm not interested, or even text me after he left and say he changed his mind. It's just seems like they're gutless.

He was definitely looking to bargain as he got it well below the asking price and I don't think anyone would really see me as being dodgy. I'm too clean cut.

The joys of buying and selling stuff. Lots of people out there with nothing better to do and lots of time for doing it.

You should have asked for a deposit.

I wasn't going to do that, there's an ATM just around the corner from us. It's not like he took my car and didn't pay, it's just a gobsh1te move to say he'll pay and run away without any intentions of following through.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 165 ✭✭LifeSaabItch

I swear some people just go out on family outings to view cars with no intention of ever buying them.

Interesting idea for a thread about buying/selling stories and the randomers you meet along the way. :)

Yeah ok, but let's say someone rang you just as he left and they were interested in the car.. and you told them sorry its sold. Then the guy never came back and you lost out on what could have been an actual sale.

Handier to just tell the guy he can leave for the money but if he doesn't leave a deposit there's nothing to say you won't talk to another buyer.

Some people will ring you just to see if their car is better than yours!

I know someone that used to do this when bored on a Saturday. Go look at a car randomly, take a test drive.

    Bizarre

With no deposit I give people 1 hour to get the cash, if not it's back on the market.

Ye I wasn't giving him longer, when he didn't show up after 15 minutes I thought something was up so rang him but he didn't answer and wouldn't text back. I wasn't losing out on a sale due to him, I just thought it was bizarre that he went to the hassle of showing up checking out the car, taking a small test drive, bargaining me down then agreeing to a price and just legging it.

I won't lose too much sleep over it anyway.:)

Don't, but just be careful that he and/or his mates don't come back to steal it:eek:.

Lots of people out there with plenty of time on they're hands.
I was selling my legnum vr4 a few years back and I had a bloke ring me up pretty much every 3rd or 4th day to talk about the car and "things in general" he was a decent bloke and big into cars so I didn't mind a bit of a natter but it got old after the 3rd time.

May be practicing negotiation skill. Still time wasting though

I had a fella come look at a Passat last year. Agreed a price and a date for collection, shook hands on it. On the day he was due to collect the car he rang me to say he was in the bank getting the bank draft and asking who to get the bank draft made out to. I told him and he said grand I'll see you in an hour. Never saw or heard from him again after that!

He probably died in a horrible, flaming car crash meters from your house, bank draft in hand.

Or maybe he just changed his mind

Had a call about a car im selling too. Woman sounded old and promised to call back the following day so her hubby could ask questions. I put off plans and got no call. Some people have no manners and no spine

I stopped doing that due to an amount of timewasters. Worst thing was a guy told me he was coming at 4 and actually came, and i was miles away haha

They probably got scared and went home, pulled all the curtains and will not be seen for a few days.
"I like the car, but he seems dodgy"
"Yes, and did you see the axe in the boot?"
    "An AXE in the boot?"
    "Yes, a huge black axe."
    "fvck it"

    monday morning, breakfast
"Glad we didn't buy from the guy in the band"
"How'd ya know he was in a band?"
"Ahbutsure I told ya about the axe"

Speaking as someone who this happened to the other day while down in that neck of the woods I can say I was rather pissed that I couldn't talk to the seller or hear the car running.

Not one bit impressed but others may find it funny this happens to me too often

flip side went to see a car, liked it and said I would come back a few days later with herself.Got a text a day later to say offer on car offering first refusal, thought nice try I will pass let me know if it falls through. Car still for sale a week later rang to be told yes, no mention of previous offer, organised a mechanic despite being assured car was perfect for 6.30 inspection only to get a text at 6.05 that car was sold.Got the impression they did not want to sell car to me seemed nice and respectable people maybe I dont seem nice and respectable. Have a feeling car is still for sale

Sounds like the car was simply sold? If he/she is in the market to sell surely they would want to sell as quickly as possible with best price they could get.

As for the first refusal thing. It could be a bluff but at the same time, I've seen enough posts from adverts.ie that people made offer and then fell through for whatever reason

Had a guy look at my civic last year. He was full of **** though. All I hear was ''nice interior, nice clean engine bay, nice drive'' Then he ranted on how it'd be perfect for his brother as a little project.. He really seemed excited by it. Then nothing. He simply refused to answer my calls again

Anyone trying to sell a car on the web and when you tell people the price they just hang up? Had this experience with my almera. The car was at a fair price but the amount of ignorant ****ers who just hung up on me

A lot of people really are scared to tell you their not intrested in buying the car off you.
