I am about to buy part worn tires and I don't wanna make a mistake. Has anyone put 225 tires on the Saloon mk3 Mondeo before. I've read the original brochure and it says 205, but thats what tires the car came with new.

So please someone help me before I make a costly mistake.

The reason I want 225's is because I think it looks nicer than 205 and not much price difference. Also my car has 16inch alloys.

    Cheers

hard to say with certainty without knowing the offset of the wheel and other stuff.

chances are though, it's only 20mm, be grand.

No Mondeo on the list. Must be US Ford.

You don't select the vehicle, you enter in your tyre size under that list, select the tyre size you want to change to on the other side and click compare

    Using 195/65R15's as an example

So judging by that, would you say they will fit with no problems. To be honest, I don't know what's going on there.

But thanks for the effort. Appreciated.

It depends on the width of the wheel. How wide are the wheels currently on the car?

I wouldn't choose tyres on that basis myself but every man to himself. Be warned that the wider tyres will have an negative impact on your acceleration and your fuel economy will take a nose dive also...

Also be careful buying part worn tyres as they can sometimes be a false economy. I'm not going to jump on a high horse or anything but you can be lucky and unlucky with them.

I've bought them before myself twice. One time round I good quite good value and mileage out of them. The other time round I would have probably being best of buying new tyres. The best wear is often in the first few mm of the tyre I believe

More important is what is the sidewall size

225/55 is a lot bigger a tire than 225/45 for example

What do you mean sidewall? My friend put 225 tires on an A4 even though the car came with standard 195 tyres.

As in the side of the tyre, Where the size etc is.

AFAIK Mondeos use a either a 6.5J or 7J rim and use a 205/55/16 tyre as standard, so the sidewall will be 112.75mm standard and fitting a 225/50/16 will mean a 112.50mm sidewall.

Basically the sidewall will be the same and the tyre will be 20mm wider than normal.

So it should work no problem?

It depends on the on the sidewall of the new tyres you are fitting. If as LifeSaabItch mentions and you are changing from 205/55 R16 to 225/50 R16 you'd be grand with regard to the profile. But if you were changing from 205/55 R16 to 225/55 R16 you are pushing the boat out a bit as the car will end up over 10mm or about half an inch higher. Might not seem a lot and unlikely you'd have any problem with the tyres rubbing the arches but could end up look a bit duff.

The profile is expressed as a percentage of the tyre width so a 205/55 tyre has a profile of 112.75 (205*55%). Hop this helps...
