Do you need a letter of invitation from your hotel in China before you can obtain your Chinese tourist visa and how do you go about getting such letter. For example, if you are staying in numerous different places, do you need to get a letter of invitation from each place you are staying?

    Thanks

In not sure, I've got 3 tourist visas for China from Hong Kong and never needed an invitation letter

You don't need invitation letter. You can book a hotel from booking.com for duration of your stay and cancel later if you need to. They don't charge your credit card. You will need flight tickets too.

As Halkar said, no letter needed

I never had to show proof of a hotel if required just book online as suggested and cancel if you want .

Probably best to open a new thread for discussion if needed otherwise let this 1 year old thread rest in peace :)
