If you where sitting in an airport waiting to board a plane, or on a plane coming in to land, or about to take off, Would you listen to air traffic control radio if you could?

Im asking because I supply the ATC radio feed from Dublin to a network that allows you to hear this on your phone etc. But lots of people I have asked think that it would make them too nervy if they could listen in.

    Would you listen to it?
    If not, why not?

Mods, I didnt put this in "Aviation and Aircraft" as I would like a more public opinion, thanks.

    It's all gibberish to me.

I am listening right now not making me in the least bit nervy, but I am sitting at home on my couch.

It would get fairly boring after a while I suppose, and as mentioned, the novelty would quickly wear off. It's only something I'd listen to for a few minutes because to be fair it's very repetitive. Of course, like a lot of other people, I would tune in if I knew an airplane was in trouble and there was a Mayday call but to be honest even then it'd be fairly disturbing to know that an aircraft of people are going to their deaths.

I can't see how it is nervy for some people in general though!

If you give it 10 min you start to understand, you can put flightradar24 on as well so you can "see" the planes that your hearing.

I'd hack into it and be all like "aaaahhhhh breaker breaker I'm sick of these muthaf*cking snakes on this muthaf*cking plane! HELP!!! WE'RE GOING DOWN!" and sh*t.

    Crackers be like "Whhhhaaaaa?"

And I be like - "Heh! Heh! Heh!"

    Word.

I'd listen, but the air stewards are pretty militant about electrical devices, especially the earphone variety, are off for takeoff / landing.

Last time I flew was 2011, I had a GPS at the window and headphones on without a bother, has it changed?

Here's a question I've wanted to ask planey people. WTF is the attraction of sitting outside D. Airport, alongside the road going down to Santry, watching feckin planes taking off and landing? Are ye waiting for a crash? Does it not get a bit, err, dull? Like winged busses to me, tbh. Mystifies me.

As to listening in to the ATC, it would have about as much appeal as listening to the bus inspector talking on the radio to the drivers. "Don't spare the horses and try not to crash old son" is about as much interest as I have in planes. Like watching paint dry IMO.

Well yes and no. You were always supposed to have all electrical devices off for taxi and take off/ landing, but they seem pretty strict about it in the last year or two.

Would be fun to have for looking at the planes taking off and landing when you're sitting airside though.

    If you've ever driven under
One as they fly down to land it can be really freaky - especially the big ones that roar. I find
Myself Ducking in the car every time.

Not sure about listening thou - might try it once to "see" and go from
    There ! Must
    Be more interesting
    With a radar or map
    So you can see
Where they are all crus-crossing .

Maybe it's really an an audio spectator sport!?

Well, it would certainly beat listening to Pat Kenny or Joe Duffers.

Well, if I was you, I wouldn't go down there after dark and knock on any car windows to ask that question. If you know what I mean... ;);)

Yeah, i sort of figured that, but what's the deal in daylight:confused: Also, because I am big and scary, I probably would, just for the craic.
On topic, why exactly, or what advantage/interest would there be in listening to the ATC feed?

I dont work with anything to do with aircraft, I just happen to have a passing interest in radio communications, the guys on the aviation forum here where crying out for a new feed and I was able to do it, thats all.

I listen every time I'm waiting for a flight, Mech. Doesn't make me nervous at all.

And usually spend like an hour listening to Live ATC with flight radar on most days

As a matter of fact, I'm listening right now

Cool, and I'm not being one bit sarcy, genuinely interested - what is the fascination? Why the interest?

OK, misunderstanding. I thought you worked in ATC at dublin airport and were putting the feed out

imaginary numbers are used to make radar work, though i'm not sure of their role in it
that's why i was asking you - who i thought would but turns out you don't

    are they not plane spotters?

I've a keen interest in aviation so it's quite fascinating being able to sit here and see where planes are while listening to what they're saying.

Why the interest? Oh I don't know..I just find it..interesting. Like how people like cars, computers, movies etc. I'm not saying I only like planes, I like all those things too.

You get into it quickly if you're interested in military or something too

Sometimes when ive nothing to do its fun to see a plane in the distance, turn on http://www.flightradar24.com/ to find out where its coming from / going and also listen in to there comms, its just fun to me'

There was a great thread during the April wind storms in the Aviation Forum listening to and watching the Aircraft Decide if they where going to attempt to land or divert to somewhere else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,124 ✭✭✭Mech1

What I see as the main advantage to me is when im collecting relatives off a flight, I can track there flight, hear the pilot getting permission to land etc, and arrive in the pickup area just on time. Saves all the waiting about and parking fees.

and yes then you would find me parked up beside the runway, watching!!

I listen to it quite a bit on the rare occasions that we have some unusual weather, be it storms, snow or thunderstorms, its interesting to see how things are being affected. Never used it on my phone but nice to have the option there I suppose
