Planning permission would be required for that. Certain sized dishes can be exempt however subject to location. The conditions relating to the exemption are
    1. Not more than one such antenna shall be erected on, or within the curtilage of a house.

    2. The diameter of any such antenna shall not exceed 1 metre.

    3. No such antenna shall be erected on, or forward of, the front wall of the house.

    4. No such antenna shall be erected on the front roof slope of the house or higher than the highest part of the roof of the house.
The above is extracted from S.I. No. 600/2001 and the exemption is class 4 and can be viewed here

Do you need a dish that size for a particular reason or is it just for the hell of it?

    Is the wall strong enough?
That's about x5 the wind load of a 1m dish

Bigger dishes are usually mounted on the ground on a specially laid concrete apron. A civil Engineer usually needs to be consulted to mount as big as 6' x 7' on a flat roof.

A 6' x 7' install needs done by a professional who will know how to obtain planning permission. It needs pointed about x10 more accurately than a Sky Dish if it's for Ku band. Not such a problem for C band. It's too big to see some constellations as single satellite positions and may lose some satellites twice a day without a 24 hr cycle elevation driver motor if on Ku band.

It'll be fine for the freesat channels though if you align it right.

I think Watty has covered everything else.

    Tony

My response was sarcasm. Quite obviously A dish that size would not be used for Freesat (60cm is the normal dish size).

Presumably its being used for Nilesat @ 7.0W.

The Planning laws are A satellite dish (up to 1 metre in diameter, and no higher than the top of the roof) at the back or side of the house (a dish on the front needs planning permission). Only one dish may be erected on a house

I'd be willing to bet you'll be a favourite with the neighbours hanging that off your house.

Why would you even need a dish that size?

The best bet would be to mount it on the ground on a concrete base as described above. If it gets windy it'll turn into a great sail.

More than likely though your neighbours will complain if you attempt to hang if off your house. Neighbour next to me has one about 150cm in diameter on the side of his house and it's still there 12 months later.

Its not on my house 3 doors down as i stated.

Why would you even need a dish that size?

Very Good Question don't know why i didn't think of it.

Would like to add at this point, given some of the replies here, that I wasn't having a go at anyone with my previous post. I'm genuinely interested as to what you/they are trying to get with this dish.

Ah right i picked you up wrong then. seems I'm not the only one.

It's your neighbour who has put the dish up?

sure lodge a complaint with the council they'll point you in the right direction.

Foreigners usually put them up so they can receive free sat in there respective languages or I know for a fact Polish people use them to access there version of a sky box. this is what my neighbour is using it for.

So is this a case of the neighnours having this dish and you looking to see if they are in breach of any rules or regulations or am I reading this wrong?

If it disrupts the area or blocks phone tv signal it can be a problem, search from Google says a dish like this interferes with with sky dishes and mobile phones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Mr.Fred

It'd depend on the frequency/direction but I doubt it would have nay effect on either of them tbh.

Are the aesthetics of it bothering your or are you actually having any issues with the items you've mentioned above?

Isn't it just for reception, like a Sky dish? It won't emit radio interference, any more than any other receive-only dish.

I'd be more worried about it getting loose in the wind if it's not mounted securely.

Yes. Local Council enforcement issue. Un-authorised development.

They really have it in the front garden ?

yes its erected on the front of the house. if you look at the photo of the house you see a bay window? its erected between upper and lower window.

Jesus does the landlord know. That will wreck the brickwork on the house.

Not alone that but that size dish raised off the ground would be highly unsafe. 7ft by 6ft would cover the whole brickwork panel between the upstairs and downstairs windows. Can they even see out!

no its between the upper and lower windows. don't know if the LL knows but its up now and hugh

Attached is an information notice from Cork City Council regarding the erection of satellite dishes on a residence, other councils probably have similar guidelines

I would be worried if it got windy and came off the wall could do serious damage to another house, car or even passer by. Also it could cause serious damage to the front of the house, autumn storms are going be fun if that thing is still hanging!

From my calculations there is approx 1300mm - 1400mm (approx. 4' - 6") between the windows so the dish is nowhere as big as claimed by the OP.

I think the issue is with the visual impact of the dish and the worries about it doing damage in a storm are secondary.

Either way it's in a position that is in breach of the regs so OP has a valid complaint should he bring it to the attention of the council.

Oh I fully agree but the point I was making is that The OP's claim to the size appears to be exaggerated and despite being told at least twice that it needed planning permission he posts this

Im not sure what more people can do for him.

It could be partially covering the windows.

I'd like to see a photo: I'll be a bit disappointed if it isn't a big brute of a C-band dish or something.
