I am looking to take up golf and I'm looking for recommendations for best place to start. Any recommendations would be appreciated for the following:

    absolute beginners lessons.
a club that is welcoming of beginners
ideas of how to go about meeting up with people to play with.

I invested in good set of clubs a couple of years ago but for a number of reasons didnt really follow through.

I'm in South Dublin City. Anywhere in Dublin or north wicklow.

Hey Rory, as a Club, I would recommend City West to join, some good deals and a few attractive offers, the course is a nice gentle one to start on, that can also present a good test, For lessons, Dave Lavelle in Spawell DR, or Stephen O Donnell in Stepaside DR.

    Enjoy

Lessons are Key ! Take 5 now and one a month !

Very tough game and if you don't take lessons your wasting your time !

I have improved a lot because of lessons !

What clubs did you buy ?

    Stick to par 3 for 2013 !

    hi Rory,

have you started yet? so exited, isn't it?

i started year and half ago and i think i followed a good route on golf so just let you know what i did and you can see if you like the way.

before i started i watched a looooooot of videos, articles.... and didn't lissten to anyone's recommendation. because i liked to understand golf on first.
got a set of irons (second hand) started going to driving range. tried to implemt all the theory to the swing and started to understand a bit of golf.

stuck in the range for 6 month and didn't touch woods. had one lesson for some of my questions.

after 6 month started to play par 3 courses. u r in the sourth. Stepaside is good. there is one in Wicklow very good too.

after 3 month i had one more lesson to avoid any bad habits.

back to the range for one more month tried to solve problems and started going to proper golf courses. and started with really easy one such like Leopardstown Golf center.

my own opinion is that don't bother to join any club yet. (it is not that important at beginning)

    hope you enjoy the game!!!:D

see if you can join a golf society maybe (perhaps the boards.ie one), link is in the sticky.

Societies are a great way to start out with IMO.
Different courses and good craic will keep the interest levels up.

Good God stay away from City West, it might have good deals but it is an awful golf course. Actually stay away from all clubs, If you are brand new to the game, there is no point in joining a club yet. Get yourself going with Lessons and practice in the ranges first till you start hitting the ball somewhat.

Best advice you are going to get If you ask me. lessons really are the key along with range practice.

Get out and play a bit of pitch and putt aswell.

this guy didnt listen to anyones advice but thinks you should listen to his.
6 months in the range will bore you to death and you will never want to take it up properly, and get lessons (1 is not enough), dont teach yourself.

Do these guys really think you don't need lessons to play the game. do they actually realise that Tiger, Rory and the boys on tour probably get more lessons than all of us put together!

About the only decent thing he says is not to join a club yet..... Find your way, then when the time is right, you will find a club that suits you, maybe with friends already members, good location for you, and most importantly, a course you like.

Incidently, I'm a member in Greystones, so would be happy to take you out there sometime for a few holes

u see!the way u read my post is exactly what i didnt want to happen! when a person doesn't have a clue what golf might be and other people start to give any technical advices it will not help at all. use strong/nuture/weak grip, interlock ur fingers, keep ur head down/up, whip motion, relax ur arms, keep ur spine straight………all these are correct only if u understand what they mean. and different people will definitly be physically and mentally different therefore, people should implement all the correct things individually.
at beginning stage all i meant is try to understand golf technical aspects in ur way first and not be manipulated by others. no one swings the same. u have to understand urself and choose the suitable way to learn and contral this game.
take lessons is essential but only when u know what u r looking for and what u want to amend in ur swing or to find some faults that u r not able to realise. cos a golf teacher would b very experienced and skillful but would not know ur abbility/personality…… in an hour or two. so go to lessons with ur own study done first! in here i dont want to talk about Tiger or Rory……
thanks for having at least one same thought.

    hope i mad it clear!

by d way, ur club is a nice one and dont mind to learn something from u.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still not really sure how to start/restart. I played a bit back in 2007 and 2008 but still consider myself an absolute beginner. I actually took 2 lessons and found it helpful back then. Is there any golf societies or clubs out there that welcome beginners?

I never said it was a great course.....but its far from awful......I suggested purley as a nice gentle course to start that offers good value and has a lot of first time members.....No affilliation with the place.....
