Pathways to Accounting?

I left my university course in May only having completed the first year because I decided that the course and the careers that would be available afterwards weren't for me. It was an engineering degree.

I'm currently finding out about what I would enjoy as a future career and once I know I plan to aim towards it and do whatever is necessary to get the qualifications etc.

I've been thinking about accounting recently. I think I may enjoy that type of work. But, my A level grades aren't great (I was schooled in the north) and I probably wouldn't be able to get into a degree course.

Are there other ways to get into basic accounting with few qualifications?

What different qualifications would a typical accountant need to eventually become a chartered accountant? I know that takes years but could someone tell me how I would go about this in Ireland?

Have a look at taking the Accounting Technician course, this will give you some exemptions from the Chartered Exams and is a good way to start. Also check out the Elevation programe with the Institute

    It was an engineering degree.
Loads of people with Science/Engineering degrees do PostGrads in Finance and become accountants.

A friend of mine has a primary degree in Physics and now works as an accountant for a top London Accountancy firm.

A degree is just a path to where you want to go. If you come from a Science/Engineering background it is very easy to pick up the business skills but practically impossible for a business person to pick up science/engineering skills.

The OP didn't finish his degree and doesn't look like he wants to finish.

I normally don't recommned the Technician route, but in this case it might suit your circumstances. Good luck.
