DC5 problems

    Hello,

my integra DC5 is giving a few problems. on starting it is revving between 800-1200 and fluctuating between. It should start just below 2000 and reduce below 1000. The engine warning light is on. While driving it feels like i have to give it petrol just to force it along, like too many revs for what it is doing. It can also get fits of jerking.

I was stuck earlier to go to the bank , about 14 miles round trip , and had no other car available to me at the time. It went from just under a quarter of a tank to on the red low fuel light.

I had the idle air control valve cleaned before as it has gone like this for maybe a few days over the last 2 years, but then seemed to correct itself and work away fine for a few months.

Any ideas on what to do next ? Where is the port for plugging in a computer to it ? I can look for someone who might have the software so I can find out once and for all is up with it. I have had my friend looking at it, he is a mechanic, serviced, plugs changed etc, but i'm thinking at this stage i may need to take it to a Honda dealership. :( €€€€€

Although you've cleaned it it still sounds like the IACV thing to me. They can just go bad, where a cleaning is a temporary fix but then it comes back. Did you reset the ECU after the cleaning(On the DC2, you pull the ECU and the fuse beside it, then start the car, but don't touch the throttle for ten minutes so likely the same with the K20?). Might also be an air leak somewhere, either at a gasket, a pipe or even a crack in the intake somewhere. A faulty O2 sensor might be another issue? That would throw an engine warning light up. Hopefully it's not a buggered IACV as IIRC you have to buy the whole throttle body as the IACV isn't listed as a separate part by Honda. Ouchy wallet time.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    IACV

I'd be thinking MAF/MAP( whichever this has )... IACV should be closed when the throttle is open and shouldn't really cause excess fuel usage.... If the car can't measure the inlet air volume, it'll horse fuel in to be safe... Do you get a smell of petrol or more smoke than usual from the exhaust?

Do you have a check engine light on?

I will give it back to him for a few days and he can check for air leaks etc. It has been a while since the IACV has been cleaned so he might give that another look at. The ECU was not reset the last time it was cleaned, but i will mention this to him.

The NCT is out the 30th of this month , but I am off on holidays in a week and a half so it won't be tested till August. I would still hope to solve this problem soon. Despite the petrol light only after coming on a while ago, I would be anxious on the 5 mile drive to garage for petrol !!

A few years ago I think I was quoted around €300 for the plug in computer check, I thought that was very excessive. Hopefully if it comes to it I can do something cheaper myself, or find someone with the correct connections and software.

ya check engine light has come on, and there is a strong smell of petrol from the car and alot more smoke that i can ever remember off the car. You would smell the car from 15-20 metres away !!!
