Hi just wondering would the 2 back tyres on my car pass the NCT with what seems to be cracks along the tyre side wall, images below

Nope, they will count that as sidewall cracks IMO and rightly so. Why are you driving on such things is a better question? If $$, get some partworns on.

What brand are they? 7years old is past the "recommended" lifespan of a tyre, though typically they dont degrade that bad within the period.

Have seen similar tyres both pass and fail. It is all down to the individual tester on the day.

Regardless of whether they pass the test or not they should be changed.

You care more for your car to pass the NCT than for your safety and the safety of others?

Put a clio through about 3 weeks ago with all 4 tyres with sidewall cracks. It was sitting around for about a year. Got an advisory that 2 tyres were gettin old.

    Bit of tyre shine op.

    I doubt they'll pass.

My elderly neighbour had an old tractor with cracks developing in the tyres.

His solution was to apply a coat of old engine oil to the tyres using a paintbrush

What date of manufacture is on the tyres? It is recommended that tyres older than 5 years should be replaced irrespective of wear as rubber perishes over time as well as use.

Personally I wouldn't have them on my car irrespective of whether they would pass the NCT or not. Them and brakes are all that keep you on the tarmac.

My money's on a Pass/advisory. Visual retest for tyres will be free anyway. Is that mark the 43 week of 2006?

High horse me hole. Or are you one of those "live and let live" merchants? To afraid to speak up when you see something that's clearly wrong?

Thankfully we have the NCT now...

My last car failed on less cracks than that on the inside sidewall, a fail i reckon

if any tester ok's those tyres, she should be send to specsavers, and then to the office to collect his/her p45.

The car parked up for nearly 5 years in a shed, its not on the road yet and was just looking for opinions on the tyres, I have to replace both front tyres but was unsure of the rear tyres as they have a lot of thread depth left on them

To me, Id say they'd fail, normally Id say change them, but it depends

depends what kind of driving you intend to do? or what you intend to do with the car and what age it is? and what brand the tyres are?

Id certainly suggest taking it easy on them, at the least You could put it through the test and see what they say, for all aspects of the test.

I wouldnt be going to any advance/pre inspection crowds, especially if you can check things yourself. What are they going to tell you, only you need to get it done or do stuff that has no need. See what the NCT says first then follow up with work. So long as you are not tearing around the place on the way to the test.

Some bizarre advise in this thread IMO. If the car was parked on the tyres, without supports, for 5 years then they are fcked anyhow. The fact they are visibly fcked is a courtesy confirmation from nature. Then the fact they are 7years old anyway.

They do have lots of thread, but fat lot of good that will do you when that thread separates from the tyre (check out were it tears itself apart and your thread cracking, looks similar right?!):

    OP:
Drive in and chance your arm with them

the worst case scenario is that you will have to change them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭John2009

Safety is paramount with the car as I'll have my son and dog travelling in it with lots of planned driving so I'll replace them, was unsure so said I'd put up a post, the car is a 2001 Renault Megane

Why I said it depends, If you were just pottering around locally on short distances or if you were selling it soon and forewarned a potential owner (assuming it passed the NCT and you didnt want to pay out for new tyres for someone else), Id have said chance it.

If you plan on doing mileage, well the chances are you will be going at speed at times, in that case the thread could seperate and the danger would be unacceptable, but there are people that potter around and dont exceed 50kph and I wouldnt class this as much of an issue.

I still say NCT it first and see if it throws anything else up as you say its been sitting around a few years, any follow up work required might outweigh the benefit of puting new or even part worns on prior to the test.

If you cant see any cord its a pass,I would give the customer benefit of the doubt if i couldn't see any cord, would be an advisory on the date and id explain to the customer about the cracks, after that its up him to change them if he wants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭kilianmanning

I passed with one tyre seriously perished a few months back. Was way worse than was in the picture & I got away with an advisory for over 6 years old. It was the original spare of the car

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,985 ✭✭✭✭dgt

Whatever about bald tyres but cracks are the limit. A seriously weakened hardened tyre subject to high speeds, cornering and stopping, often in wet conditions. An inevitable blowout

If it blows out on the motorway and an accident occurs it's too late to change it then. Maybe decent tyres will seem cheap then as bits of the car are swept off the road and central barrier.

But don't take anyone else out with you in the process.

    Especially me

there's no way you should pass a tyre in that condition, but I know you are just doing you job to your set out guidelines but it does demonstrate that many aspects of the NCT is flawed.

I had four tyres like this when the car went through the nct. Nothing was said , the car passed.

Although the tyres are five years old as opposed to seven.

The worst case scenario is that the OP gets a tire blowout while driving to the NCT on tires that are obviously knackered.

Its pretty shocking that such an obvious defect can get through the NCT.

Hi again, i got the back tyres changed today, things are tight with cash so went ahead with 2 part worn tyres for the rear wheels,

I got 2 Continental PremiumContact tyres for €35 each fitted and balanced,

Quick query the original rear tyre size was 185-55-R15 and the Continental tyres i got are 185-60-R15, now is that tyre size ok for a Renault Megane and will the front tyres need to be the same size as the Contis or can i stick with the original 185-55-R15 for the front??

    Thanks

Got them from a crowd called G. Tyres up in Churchfield Industrial Estate, around the corner from Eircom Churchfield Exchange

Make them all the one size.

    dont have to for nct.

the two front tires should be the same sizes exactly and the two rear tires should be the same exactly

i think its the tires on the axle must match. so the front axle can be 195/55/16 and the rear can be 195/60/16 and its not an issue.

now at the same time im a person that believes that all tyres on a car must be the exact same... i.e if you buy a new tire that it should match the others like bridgestone t001 and same size etc.

not these muppets going around that still have one winter tyre on the rear from dunlop and a landsail on the front...........
