I'm hearing a lot about Reeperbahn, is this essentially the Temple Bar of Hamburg?

It's more debauched than Temple Bar & has considerably less charm, which really is saying something OP.

It's a red light area where even in the middle of the day feels very dodgy. I was always told to leave your wallet in your hotel safe and only take small amount of cash, chances of being mugged are reasonable.

Ah being mugged sounds great! Would you still guys still recommend going to Reeperbahn? Or are there any nicer places to go out and get a few drinks?

    jasyus, is not that bad.
I was there late in the evening with my wife who was heavily pregnant at the time and not a bother.

Supermacs in Galway at 3am would be far more dangerous to be honest.

Reeperbahn isn't that bad, just kind of tacky. I guess it's something you kind of have to see if you're in Hamburg, but I wouldn't spend a lot of time there.

The women bouncers on the doors of some of the "clubs" nearly make the trip worthwhile, in a pass the eye bleach sort of way. Nothing to be afraid of tho, as safe as the party area in any big city, just very seedy.

The Reeperbahn is not that bad, there are plenty of strip bars and laufhauses but it's safe. There are also plenty of theaters, gig venues, bars and restaurants there as well so you get a real mix of people. In 8 years living here I've seen no real trouble, couple of skirmishes but they are usually started by stag groups. The end of a Saturday night in Ireland is much more dangerous than anything you will encounter here.

It's pretty dead during the week and Schanze is a much nicer area for going out in.
