I had a root canal + crown done last year and my dentist charged me 700 quid. Was talking to a friend this morning whos getting the same done(at a different dentist) and hes being charged 1500. I cant figure out why mine only cost 700 while hes being charged over twice that amount???
Does anybody have any explanation as to the difference in price? Whats the usual going rate for a such a job?

Depends on the tooth, who does the job (general dentist or specialist) the type of crown and the lab that makes the crown.

All root canals and all crowns are not the same. There is no going rate, only a spectrum of fees.

Its like asking what the going rate if for a steak in a restaurant. Depend on the chief, the steak, the quality, the quantity, the raw materials, the service and your location.

Hi I need to get three root canals and crowns on left lower 2 molars and pre molar. My endodontist in Galway has quoted me 2400 euros without problems (with could be extra) and without crowns ---the dentist would have to do this he has said.

Is it an option to have these three back teeth pulled and get implants or partial denture?

am 41 years old but literally cannot afford this much money and crowns on top of it. My husband is unemployed but we do not have a medical card as I work and unfortunately every penny we have in savings we had used for IVF and were thankfully blessed with our little girl after seven years trying.

This is not a complaint about prices just a genuine question looking for opinions. Any help greatly appreciated

First off 2,400 euro seems a bit steep for 3 teeth.
I had 2 Molars treated last year by an Endodontist and he gave me a slight reduction on the 2nd tooth .
A premolar should cost less than a molar as it has less roots so I would expect the total cost to be around 1800-2000 .

Its crazy money for a few hours work ,it really is .
I know its a highly skilled job and I'm all in favour of dentists being well paid but 2400 euro is a good months wage to alot of people .

Are you sure you definitely need 3 root canals on adjoining teeth ,it seems a bit much ,would fillings suffice ?

You could get implants but they are expensive ,they would cost more that the root canals although there probably wouldnt be much difference in price.

If the root canals aren't urgent you could try the dental hospital where students do work at a reduced price but you could be waiting a long time .

Implants cost as much if not more than root canals and crowns, dentures are bad for you teeth and gums long term.

It is unlikely that you are having a toothcahe from 3 teeth at the same time. Best get the most urgent things done first, say the worst root canal, then get the tooth built up for a the crowns (core filling) sometimes a band is cemented around the tooth to stop it fracturing. This will hold you for a while. Get things done in stages.

Hi all thanks for the advice. I never had a cavity until about three years ago. This was on second molar from back. I had lived in USA but I married my husband who is from Ireland and we moved over here three years ago.

My USA dentist who was my childhood dentist and quite elderly at the time (has actually passed away a year ago) filled this tooth for me before we moved back. The tooth gave me some pain but I did not realize this was not normal just thought due to cavity would have to put up with it.

Dentist here when I went here about cleaning realized there was something wrong ---the tooth had not been filled properly and there was a huge hole in the tooth - he said the decay had moved to the two teeth next to it - the very back molar the decay is close to the nerve and he says there is abcess between molar and premolar. So, from having one cavity in my life now I am looking at three root canals :(

Thank you for the advice may try just to do one at a time --- the second molar from back is the original issue so may just try to do this one first. Thanks again.

My understanding on the crown aspect is that - most of the money goes to making it - and in a lot of cases - Dentists aren't charging very much for the specialised work that goes with the crown. (this is just my impression)

Just on getting three root canals - personally I would get a second opinion - unless you are going to a dentist that has been recommended by multiple people already.
Opinions can vary - some dentists take the opinion of filling a tooth where others can say root canal (I very nearly had two root canals done until I changed dentist !)

Can anyone help me here I was at the dentist today and I have one tooth that needs a root canal and crown and other than that I have very good teeth, but my dentist wants €1500 for the job I think its a bit much, is there anywhere in Enniskillen I could go or just go cheaper, come off it I am unemployed and don't even get any benefits here, I rely on my husband 100% to support me! Dental care is a rip off! :(

All service providers set their prices based on what the market will bare, if the market will pay €1500 them they are paid exactly what they are worth same as everyone else. It's not a rip off, it's market economics. If you do not feel the treatment is worth that, do not pay it, look for someone who puts a lower value on their work. Root canal and crown is minimum four long appointments, factor in travel time and cost then make your decision.

Hi. I need root canal treatment and a crown on a lower molar tooth. Can someone recommend a cheap dentist in the Lucan / Leixlip / Maynooth / Celbridge area? I got 2 quotes and one was €1,300 and the other is €1,500. Is there anywhere cheaper, say even in Dublin city centre. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What's the cheapest quote someone got in Ireland and where? Thanks.
