Hi all, does anyone have any advice regarding garden sheds. I'd like to go with a timber shed rather than PVC because they look well. Are they reasonably good?
Are they difficult to put in? Prepping ground etc

Any recommendations on where to get them?

    Thanks,

You can lay a shed on timbers to raise it off the ground or put the shed on gravel or paving slabs.

A cedar shed will last forever without needing to treated.

Don't have any suggestions for suppliers though.

Oh yeah I have a cedar shed that was originally bought in the 1930's! And it is still going strong.

My shed 13 years old and still holding out the rain. As long as you have good airation underneath it should be sound. Mine is up on blocks and some day I hope to turn it into my own Tavern.

My wooden shed (not the basic overlap construction) is 18 years old and is now on its last legs. I only used the water based fence paint on it which was a bad idea - have a few rotten patches on it. I'm looking to replace it soon - wood, metal or plastic? Well there is quite a difference in price. I'd be afraid that the plastic would not withstand the UV. Metal sheds tend to be very light. Both plastic and metal sheds wont support shelf brackets, so you need to think in terms of free-standing shelves, which adds cost.

I think I may end up going with another good quality shed, but would use some good quality wood stain or preservative on it and not fence paint..

While I agree with most of Homers post, I don;t agree on the shelving.

You can put cross beams on the vertical supports and fix shelving to them.

    Just sayin'
    :D

I've an 8 x 8 wooden shed with a metal cladding roof that's 20 years old this year - still ok! A felt roof wouldn't last the same.

Strangely enough i was out this week looking at sheds as I need to organise things in the external boiler house and some inside storage, they've gotten so full it's dangerous in there.

I wanted to buy a cheaper shed as I won't live in this house forever and realistically I won't take it with me when I move either. However I can see myself being here for 5-6 yrs yet so I still wanted a reasonable shed.

    I'm in Cork city so only Corkonians will know most of these names but I visited & compare sheds at;
Hanleys - garden centre 10X6 sloped flat roof delivered & errected at ~€585
    DPL - builders providers 8 X 6 Normal shed
CBP - builders providers - no sheds for sale
Woodies - metal 8 X 6 was around €300 but very flimsy feeling
    Steeltech - Timber 10 X 6 delivered & erected + torch on roof (extra) €640

I went with the steeltech shed in the end as I was happier with the quality of the timber and construction plus they had an internal membrane lining. The others just seemed flimsier although i would have liked Hanleys one except the delivery was 10-14 days and I can't wait that long.

Now after all that the real point of my post , If I knew I was staying in this house I would have considered one of the Steeltech METAL sheds - some of which can be ought in a wood effect finish and had double glazed windows and doors, the quality of those is superb. Here i a link to the price list - a 23'6" X 10' is €3,390 and the thing is bloody massive inside. I walked into one and I reckon you could put industrial shelving in there and have your machines up high/ a mezzanine area if you bought one fo those hand-forktrucks. I've bookmarked that page for when I do buy my permanent home and am installing a shed.

If ye want I'll put up photos of the shed but realistically the best thing to do is go to one of the steeltech showrooms - click on the link and look down along the LHS of the page, it list their showrooms.
