Cheeky Car Dealer or Oversensitive buyer!

    Hi all,

I put a deposit on a car last week from a main dealer. Happy enough with the deal, and rang this morning to confirm the sale and collection on Saturday morning. Checked carzone this evening and the car has had a €1000 knocked off the price, making it that I'm now paying 50 euro over the advertised price!

Should I be giving the dealer both barrels and looking for something to sweeten the deal or am I being oversensitive?

    Looking forward to your views

    Al

I think I'd be backing out and send someone else in to buy it next week cheaper for me.

say it to him and get 50 euro off the price.

You're not being oversensitive anyway, €1k is a lot of money by anyone's standards. Problem is, that's just the advertised price, he might come down even further.

Why is he dropping the price on a car that's already sold

If its a new car they'll probably have more than one on sale?

    Thanks chris & bigus

I've everything organised to collect it on Saturday, (bank draft, insurance, car for trade in, plus I really want the car) so I don't think backing out is an option. Do you think there is anything that I could bargain out off him? I already have a half price service in 12 months, iPod connection thrown in and a full tank of petrol?

    Thanks

    Al

Well the trade in alters everything, if you're happy with the deal go ahead, can you give more detail ?

I'd just make sure you have all that in writing before finalizing everything. Just so you won't have to start one of those 'when I bought the car the dealer promised....' type threads later on.

Good look with the new machine. Keep her between the ditches.

I imagine you'll be told that (a) it was a mistake or (b) this is the cash price only. Possibly someone in the office dropped the price online as you were doing the deal in the forecourt?

Certainly mention it and depending on the response take it from there- hesitating from going ahead with the deal may help get a few more euro off the car but be prepared for an excuse you probably won't be able to argue with - it's certainly worth pursuing though

The -1000euro would be for a straight cash deal. Op is trading in against the new car

tell him you want 666quid off the agreed price. Just because.

Thanks for all of your replies. Just to give a bit more detail, the price was 23k up to yesterday and the deal was done last Saturday for 18k cash plus 4k trade in, provided that i got the loan from AIB. I'm 99% certain was still €23k when I rang this morning to confirm the deal and organise collection, but when I checked carzone to look at the car it was 22k. There was no mention of cash price against either price.

I will still buy the car because its exactly what I want, but I'm a bit peeved that he has knocked a grand off the price

Does anyone have any ideas what I might get off him, (I already have the bank draft for 18k, and the order form that he gave me on Saturday)

If you've already agreed to buy it at €18k and your trade in there's not much you can do since you've entered a contract, if it was put up to €24k online you wouldn't be paying extra. Be happy with your purchase and don't worry about it.

Someone in the office has made a mistake and instead of marking your car sold has put the price of another car up.

You could always get someone to call them and ask about the car.....

The price advertised on the web is most likely a straight deal discounted price i.e. no trade-in. When you have a trade-in that price no longer applies.

What are you getting? Is it something rare?

If you were happy with the deal when you first struck it then I would not let it annoy you. There could be a number of reasons why the price has changed. Maybe now that the car has sold he has marked it down until it leaves the garage so that anyone looking at his website thinks he is good value even though he would have no intention of selling at the lower price.
