Cycling Holiday in Asia..

A fraction OT [and have done a search and did not find it asked before]..

But Im going on honeymoon later in the year, right this second we are looking at Vietnam, and we would both love to cover a fair bit of it on bike [so leisure cycle to check out the world around us, rather than race ;)]. There are many many websites for cycling holidays, so choice is not a problem at all...

I could be insane [and feel free to call me that ;)], but from the web I think they all look savage expensive, starting at around €90-100 per day [for a circa 10+ day trip] - and generally they include "some" meals, and [weirdly IMHO] *none* of them include a helmet and so on..

Has anyone done anything like this in SE Asia, and would we be better off to book in advance or to wait until we get there and book with a local agent, for somewhat local prices? [maybe its best to do a series of short trips and not one big all inclusive long trip?]

how about buying a bike there than after donateit to an orphanige or something like that

than plan where you want to cycle to and book hotels independantly might work out the same but you would have full control on your honeymoon

I've done a tour there with redspokes (UK based) and the guide I had now works for painted roads, very good guide and reasonably priced tours.

    just back from "NAM"...
went with the intention of cycling a bit over there...
did very little as it didnt seem as practical as i thought it would be..
roads are mental anywhere apart from countryside..
bikes are generally heavy tourers...fixed speed..
heat is also a big factor between 11am and 4pm..

we just hired bikes and done day trips out of the villages.. €1.50 a day for the bike!!

the organised tours are slow and usually take in lunch in locals houses etc..
