HGV Trailer/Chassis design and its effects on a car crash

    This clip shows different HGV trailer/body designs and their impact on crash safety, it also shows the effects of various percentage overlap impacts.

    After watching the first few clips I figured if you had the option then the best thing to do in this type of accident would be to hit the trailer square on rather than offset..
    however this changed once I watched further.
    What kind of regulations are in place for these I wonder?

    My company manufacture loading dock bumpers - they absorb the impact of reversing trailers as they back up to a building. We make the best one on the market, as it happens. The forces and point impact loads generated at the rear of an artic trailer are immense - often running into hundreds of tonnes - best advice, don't hit an artic trailer - no matter what under-run bars are fitted. You are pitting 1mm steel and glass against thick steel sections butressed by heavy pallets and massive axels and suspension. It is going to be bad news for the car driver, no matter what. Respect artics - they're big, strong and deadly when encountered.
