    Hi all,

I have an interview coming up soon for a graduate engineering position. They sent me an email with info about the interview and they said I dont need a formal suit and "smart casual attire would be more suitable."

What exactly would be a good "smart casual attire"? I dont want to arrive in a full suit anyway and look like I did not read their instructions but at the same time I've never gone to an interview in anything other than a suit, any thoughts?

Jeans and shirt maybe a sports jacket if you have one. No tie and please no black shoes. Good luck.

Yeah at the moment I thinking of wearing essentially my normal suit but top shirt button undone and no tie. As for the shoes, the only other pair I have besides my black shoes are a dirty pair of runners :P doubt they'd go down too well :pac:

A suit is still a suit though. If they said casual they could be testing you outside of your comfort zone. I mentioned black shoes because i think they look wrong with jeans a nice pair of brown shoes or tan boots (Caterpillar ftw) look good with a nice shirt no tie.

That's probably what I'd do. Smart casual is hard to get right, it varies from company to company. Worst case they think you're a bit square, but I'd prefer that over the chance of being seen as a potential slob.

Wiggles88, if they're making a point of saying not to wear a suit, then maybe you could pick up a pair of chinos from Dunnes or something like that?

I don't think I'd wear jeans for a smart casual interview. I don't know what's wrong with black shoes.

A pair of creamy brown chinos, black shoes and a shirt, freshly shaven, brush the teeth, look clean and you'll be grand.

Jeans are ok for a casual interview. Black shoes with jeans just looks wrong...or is it just me thinks this lol

The OP said "smart casual" though, which unfortunately isn't that well defined. I'd err on the side of caution and wear something a little smarter than jeans. Worst case scenario, you're ever so slightly over-dressed.

Yeah I'd go for brown lace-ups, chinos/slacks, shirt with no tie and blazer. Again like many of the others, I think jeans are possibly slightly on the casual side to take a risk with. Although you could go for some dark non-distressed ones if you really feel like wearing them.

Black with brown ... ehwww, no!

OP, if you can, stake out the olace and see what employees wear, if they are in scruffy jeans, you could do smart jeans, other than that no way ...
