just got a new car, mazda 05 1.3 petrol, wondering what oil would be suitable for it? the oldschool me would have thought 'motor oil is motor oil', but a friend recently damaged her engine due to wrong oil being used. any feedback appreciated

Mazda specify an unusually thin brew for those things IIRC, 5W-20. Practically speaking that'll also mean a full-synthetic. I'm told 5W-30 is OK in them as well.

One modern cars various fluids are application specific, especially engine oil. Even coolants and power steering fluids have different types.
