US "Defence of Marriage Act" & Proposition 8 struck down

    Two fairly important things even here, seeing as how the US is respected (rightly or wrongly) by the government here in many ways:

    Section 3 of DOMA which federally banned same-sex marriages from being recognised has been struck down; and the challenge to the previous striking down of the Californian Proposition 8 has also been struck down; meaning that same-sex marriage will be legal in California again.

    Yay! I always found it completely bizarre that married gay couples in the US had significantly fewer legal rights than couples in a civil partnership in Ireland.

    There's still a way to go (there's no obligation on any state to introduce marriage equality, or to recognise same-sex marriages registered in other states) but it's a great result. A little disappointing that the margin was so close (5-4 in favour of repealing Section 3 of DOMA), but not surprising.
