Learner Permit Receipt

    Hi all,

I was told in the tax office yesterday that my receipt will cover me for driving. I'm wondering if the instructors will take you out on your lessons without your permit in hand, but your receipt, with your driver number, and all the other details in hand?? Has anyone went through the same stuff? I was told by my tax office it'll take from 2 weeks to a month for my permit to arrive due to the back log.

    Thanks,

    CurtisB

Don't know about driving instructors but I got mine near 2 years ago and went in to my local garda station and asked would it suffice for them if I was stopped with it and they said it's enough for them so I assume it would be for a driving instructor...

Thanks for that m8, I will give them a call in the next few days and see what they have to say themselves. It would be a pain in having to wait until August to be able to do my lessons and not be able to finish them by the end of the summer!

As an ADI I wouldn't. You don't hold a valid learner permit as yet. It has a "valid from" date on it. The learner permit verifies who you are. A driving tester wouldn't let you sit the test with a receipt.

The Gardai have some powers at least. They could ask you to attend a station and show them the learner permit, if you didn't show they have the power to come after you and prosecute you. We don't.

The rules are there, you have to hold a current, valid learner permit for the category you wish to take lessons in and I certainly wouldn't be taking any risks with my ADI badge by giving lessons to someone who doesn't have one.

I don't plan to take my test on the receipt I just want to take some lessons so I can finish them all by the end of the summer due to the fact I will have alot of study come September with school.

Thanks for your reply anyway, I turn 17 on the 8th of July and that's when I plan to apply and call for lessons. If I have to wait for my permit I won't be on the road until roughly the 25th and I will possibly be away then until August and then I've only a few weeks until I'm back to school!

I asked this question this morning in the motor tax office and they said it is up to the ADI. She said some accept it due to the current licence backlog and others won't so you will just have to see what your ADI says

had similiar situ 2 yrs ago and ADI wouldn't accept it and neither would our insurance company until actually could see a copy of the licence for themselves.

Thanks for this guys, i'll keep the post updated on how it goes when I ring up the company i'm getting lessons with, really hoping they'll allow it as the waiting times for the licences are apparently still crazy. Anyone here recently get a license in Dublin? What kind of wait times did you experience?

Curtis I rang the guy I am going to be getting my lessons with and he said I would need the permit for insurance reasons.

I applied in Dublin and was told 3-4 weeks.

His suggestion was to ring him in 2 weeks and schedule my first lesson for 1.5 - 2 weeks after that, that way my permit should be here by then and I will already have my lessons booked.

Thanks for that Kitten, I know what to expect now!

I really wish these wait times were not so long! Thanks a lot ;D

Regarding the test my point was, if a tester wouldn't accept a receipt then why would/should an ADI.

Don't forget there isn't a mad panic to rush yourself through the lessons, you can't sit your test until January anyway.

Hope it comes through quickly for you!

Quick update here for everyone -

None of the driving schools I called would accept the receipt, all ask for a driving licence to be in hand. It worked out all okay anyway as I am going on holidays in three days anyway and my licence will be here when I get back!

Thanks for all the advice and I hope this helps someone else too :-)

I applied 26th June in Smithfield. You could be lucky and get it in 2 weeks

I am having my first lesson on Wednesday.

I am hoping to look at a car on Tuesday so was looking at insurance today. Some were reasonable, some extortionate and others wouldn't quote

I was going to suggest looking into Aviva Driving School but I guess it's too late! My parents bought a small ford focus for me and Aviva gave us 6 months free insurance for myself when you take your first driving lesson with the after booking 13 lessons.

Ordered my permit on the 8th of July, booked my lessons for the 30th of July, went on holidays, home today on the 26th, license still isn't here, nearly three weeks later, going to have to reschedule the lessons now. I don't know why they don't just have some online automated system.

I had to replace my full license recently and it took 7 weeks for it to appear in the post. Seemingly this new company isn't handling the backlogs too well.

Holy!! I'm giving them a call tomorrow, it's crazy. Where did you get yours from?

Give them a call before you reschedule, they should be able to tell you what stage it is at.

Where's the backlog? I did my test 3 weeks ago and applied for my full licence the same day and had it within 3 days.

Is it just Dublin. Im based in Cork.

I actually came here to make a thread about this , I'm now waiting 7 weeks for my permit , is this normal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭CurtisBoylan

Damn! I gave them a call yesterday and was told that the backlogs were up to 6 weeks by one girl then was placed through to another girl who told me they were processing my application today (tomorrow) so i'm guessing it'll take another 3 days from Monday to be printed, then a few more to be posted, was told to expect it next week, which would be 3 and a half weeks.

Holy!! I'm giving them a call tomorrow, it's crazy. Where did you get yours from?

I applied for it in Drogheda, but they are not processed in house anymore so I think it is then sent off to 1 central location and it is here were the backlogs are. Hope you get sorted soon enough.
